Mountaineer Update

from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
April 20, 2011

First off, congratulations to the Schreiner men's and women's golf teams and four of it's players in particular. Both SU teams finished in third place at the ASC Championships completed yesterday at Horseshoe Bay Resort. Schreiner is the only school in the conference that has had both of its teams finish in the top three of the ASC Championships in each of the past two years. Special recognition goes to sophomore Gabby Rosales. Gabby shot 77, 78 and became the first SU golfer to ever earn an ASC championship. She beat two-time defending ASC champ (and 2010 All-American) Leslie Lee of LeTourneau by two shots to win the title. Junior Sarah Stillwell earned second team All-ASC as well. On the men's side, senior Jay Chapman became the first SU men's golfer to earn first team All-ASC. He finished fourth individually at the championships. Sophomore Andy Bell became only the third men's golfer to earn second team All-ASC at the event.

This is the final weekend for softball and baseball. Both teams finish out their respective seasons on the road.

MEN'S GOLF: in a performance that was eerily similar to 2010, the SU men got better every round and went from seventh place after round one to a third place finish for the second straight year. In addition to Chapman's fourth place finish, Bell finished 10th, freshman Zach Reichenau was 15th and sophomore Kelby Ruiz was 18th. Freshman Marcus Vargas was 36th.

WOMEN'S GOLF: finished third at the ASC championships. SU was in second place after round one, only three shots out of first. SU shot eight strokes better than last year's championship effort, but it wasn't enough to claim the title in 2011. Rosales claimed her first collegiate individual title and fifth all-tournament performance in seven tournaments this year. Stillwell finished sixth, narrowly missing her third straight first team All-ASC honor. Senior Liz Calderon capped her strong career with a 19th-place finish, followed by sophomores Simone Date and Katlynd Imbody in 25th and 26th respectively.

SOFTBALL: went 2-4 over the past week. Lost to TLU in the first three games of their weekend series by scores of 7-4, 4-0 and 5-4, before winning the series finale 5-4. SU then split with Howard Payne yesterday, losing 4-3 and winning 6-5 in nine innings. SU is 7-13 in ASC and in a fifth place tie.

BASEBALL: went 0-3 last weekend, losing 15-8, 7-6 and 1-0. SU is 4-14 in ASC and in eighth place.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: went 0-2 last weekend, losing at Hardin-Simmons 9-0 and at McMurry 6-3. Season ends with records of 1-5 in ASC (sixth place) and 2-15 overall.

MEN'S TENNIS: went 0-2 last weekend, losing at HSU and McMurry, 9-0. Season ends with records of 1-5 in ASC and 4-13 overall
