Mountaineer Update

Our teams will be all on the road this weekend and into early next week as the spring season begins its final push. Congratulations to sophomore Alex Hammond for being recognized as the ASC West Division Men's Tennis player of the week for last week. Here's a quick rundown of what took place last week and a look ahead to the schedule for our teams.

BASEBALL - went 1-2 last week. Won the first game of a three game series at UMHB, 15-4. Lost Saturday's doubleheader by 9-4 and 4-3 scores. The starting pitching in all three games was solid. Sophomore Matt Valley went the distance in the first game and got the win. Freshman Ethan Catalani pitched well in only his second start but fielding mistakes behind him hurt his effort. Freshman Daniel Brewer was a hard-luck loser in the final despite going the distance. Offensively, SU pounded out 21 hits in the opener but was shut down in Saturday's DH sweep. Senior Oscar Ibieta and sophomore Chase Valdez each had five hits to pace the attack. Ibieta hit his team-leading fifth homer in the series. Valdez and junior Marcus Myhaver each drove in four runs.

WOMEN'S TENNIS - went 1-3 last week. Lost to UMHB (0-9), Austin College (4-5) and Univ. of the Southwest (3-6) but beat TLU decisively on Senior Day, 8-1. Sophomore Kelley Spahn led the way with three match wins over the four contests. Freshman Teresa Gaitan and the #1 doubles team of senior Michelle Martinez and Gaitan each went 2-2 as did sophomore Lindsay Fox. Against TLU, Martinez was playing in her final home match at the Cree Tennis Center and won both times, at #1 doubles with Gaitan, and then won her singles match at #1 in straight sets.

MEN'S TENNIS - went 1-4 last week. Lost to UMHB, beat Austin College, lost to Univ. of the Southwest and Central Christian and TLU. The team is still trying to adjust to the losses of junior Trey Hernandez and freshman Josh Smith, who were both injured during Spring Break matches. Hammond won three times in singles action over the stretch and once at doubles. Like Martinez for the ladies, senior Tory Manchester came up with a win in his final home match against TLU, winning 7-5 in the third set to account for one of SU's two points in the match.
