Mountaineer Update

from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
August 29, 2011

Welcome (Back) Mountaineers. It's been an amazingly short (and hot) summer but we're glad to have the fall underway. Several Schreiner teams have been dealing with the heat for 10 days now and their respective seasons begin Thursday. Heading up the list, because it's a home contest, is the Volleyball home opener vs. Trinity at Edington Center at 5:00 pm on Thursday evening. We hope that the Schreiner community can come out Thursday (as well as Tuesday vs. TLU) to support our Mountaineers in their first match of 2011.

There is tremendous optimism throughout the department this year as many of our teams feel that this could be (another) breakout year for Schreiner teams. The support of our campus would certainly help these young players as they work hard to have a successful campaign. Home contests are free for SU students, faculty and staff so please come on out and watch these outstanding student-athletes represent Schreiner.

Here's a quick preview of the season for the first three fall sports teams:

VOLLEYBALL – despite the fact that the entire roster is made up of first and second year players (no seniors), head coach Phillip White (4th season) should have his best team ever and there is belief that this team could advance to the ASC Championships in November. There is tremendous depth on the roster and nearly every spot. Because of the strong competition for playing time, it's hard to say who will emerge as the top performers but sophomores Veronica Castillo, Brittney Church and Jaemi Groves could be leaders at their respective positions heading into the first match. Considering the youth and talent of this team, it's very possible that an ASC championship title will result as this group improves and matures over the next couple of years.

MEN'S SOCCER – coming off back-to-back seasons of 7-3-3 in ASC play, there are those around the league that think that Schreiner is due for an off year. The opposite might just be the case in 2011. Coach Paul Hayes (9th year) likes the blend of returning leadership, new talent and chemistry of this year's program and thinks the best may be in front of this team. Several stars return to lead this edition, headlined by seniors Philip Anderson, Taylor Bontz and Matt Johnson. Johnson and junior Tim Martinez form one of the best goalkeeper duos in the ASC and Anderson and Bontz should be two of the premier offensive players. The schedule presents a challenge as the team spends nearly its first month on the road. If the squad can weather those road matches, it could be a memorable season for Mountaineer fans.

WOMEN'S SOCCER – the SU team took a big step forward in 2010. The challenge for head coach Wayne Hinkley (4th season) will be to continue that positive momentum this fall. The Mountaineers will have a smaller than usual roster size and injuries have already been an unwanted obstacle in preseason workouts. There isn't a senior on the roster so this team could be set up for at least two years of improved play. If the team can get its players back soon and keeps them healthy, there is great reason for optimism. Junior standout Gena Monroe will be challenged by several strong young players in goal. Juniors Amanda Moon, Lacey Warner and Haley Powers and sophomore Maggie Rios were key contributors last year and will need to continue their improvement this fall. It's likely other players will emerge as playmakers as the season progresses.
