Mountaineer Update

from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
February 1, 2011

The SU basketball teams return home after a tough trip to Abilene last weekend. Both teams will be looking for some home cooking as they get a chance to play last weekend's opponents in Edington. Also, SU Baseball got its season started (unofficially) last weekend with a 12-2 win over the SU Alumni at Mountaineer Field. The Softball and Tennis teams have started practice for their respective seasons and both SU Golf teams will start Spring practice later this week. Also, for this week's basketball games, the SU Student-Athlete Advisory Council is collecting coins for the "Make a Change in 14 Days" promotion. The money raised will go the Kerr Country YMCA. You can make donations at either game or see one of the SAAC reps this week as they will also be collecting change on campus. Here's a look at recent contests for both basketball teams and a look at the schedule for the next week:

Women's Basketball - went 0-2 last week. Lost at McMurry and at Hardin-Simmons. The SU women had a cold-shooting night at McMurry and suffered a loss. Against HSU, the Mountaineers rallied late in the game and closed to within 12 points but could get no closer in the loss to the Cowgirls. Freshman Chelsea Sims was the top scorer for SU in the McM game with 11 points. In the HSU contest, freshman Bailey Harris was the top scorer with 17 points.

Men's Basketball - went 0-2 last week. Also last at McMurry and Hardin-Simmons. The Mountaineers had rough first halves in each game and went into the locker room with sizeable deficits. Sophomore Alex Hammond hit all four of three-point attempts to score 12 points and lead SU at McMurry. On Saturday, freshman Ethan Catalani scored 18 points off the bench in just 16 minutes of action to lead SU. Freshman Darren Smith added 13.
