It's a big week for our sports teams. First, our women's and men's basketball teams have their final home games of the 2010-11 season. Both teams have showed significant improvement this year but both will have to say goodbye to big contributors to the team during their SU careers tomorrow night. For the women's team, Samantha Rawlinson will play her final home game. Sammie's impact goes well beyond the basketball floor and her loss will be felt throughout the department when she graduates in May. On the men's side, we have three seniors, Riley Battle, Mitch Lawrence and Charles Hobbs. Riley and Mitch have been significant four year contributors and Charles has had to overcome injuries during his SU career, but all three are major contributors in 2010-11. Please come out tomorrow to Edington and say thank you to these four young players who've contributed so much to Schreiner Basketball during their careers.
Also, it will be the opening matches for SU women's and men's tennis this weekend. Both teams have home matches on Friday and Saturday at the Cree Tennis Complex. Here's a quick update on last week's action:
MEN'S BASKETBALL: went 2-0 last week, winning at both Sul Ross State and Howard Payne. The 2010-11 men are now the winningest SU MBKB team since Schreiner joined the American Southwest Conference in the late '90's, thanks to this recent roadtrip. Schreiner avenged a tough overtime home loss last month by pulling away late to beat Sul Ross handily, 81-64. Then, the Mountaineers went to Brownwood to sweep the season series with HPU, 88-77. As they have all year, Battle and freshmen Darren Smith carried the scoring load in the two games. Battle is especially hot, and scored 51 points in the two games and Smith has returned from injury to average 15 ppg. Junior Tyrie Prince also continues his strong season and averaged 15 points in the two games and has had 36 rebounds in his last three games.
BASEBALL: went 0-1 last week. The baseball team is facing some of the best teams in all of D-III early in the season. Although the team is still looking for its first win, they've been extremely competitive each game and Saturday was no exception. Schreiner took an early 1-0 lead and sophomore Matt Valley held it into the fifth inning. An error allowed two TLU runs but it was still a 2-1 score in the eight inning when the Bulldogs, defending ASC West champions, scored four times to break the game open. TLU pitchers held the SU offense in check, holding the team to six hits. Still, Schreiner left 11 men on base. SU travels to #22 UT-Tyler for a series this weekend.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: went 0-2 last week. Lost at previously winless Sul Ross State and lost to Howard Payne. The SRSU loss was particularly tough. Schreiner dominated the Lady Lobos in a blowout win last month at home, but could only score 14 points in the first half in last week's game in Alpine. Down by 16 at the half, SU did rally but couldn't come all the way back. Just like last month against Howard Payne, Schreiner played well in the opening 20 minutes, but the second half was rough against the talented Lady Jackets. Freshman Bailey Harris has been coming into her own and continues to lead the scoring for SU. She tallied 35 points in the two games. Freshman Olivia Swarner had 20 points against the talented HPU lineup, but scored five points against the small SRSU squad.
