Mountaineer Update

from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
February 9, 2011

Like most of us, the weather has had an impact on Schreiner Athletics. We've had games changed several times, but are making do with alternate schedules. So far, this week is unaffected but we keep our fingers crossed that that will continue. Although we don't know where we'll finish in the conference contest, but I did want to recognize the Schreiner Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, it's leaders (senior Samantha Rawlinson and junior Tom Pappas) and their advisor Drew Miller. Together, the SAAC raised more than $2,800 for the Kerr County YMCA collecting loose change for the past two weeks. Two years ago, SU SAAC raised $900 and last year it was $1,200 so this year's result is truly outstanding. Last year, we finished third in the 15-team ASC so this year's result should give us a chance to contend for one of the top spots in the ASC for 2011. Women's Basketball was the top team fund-raiser, followed closely by Volleyball, Men's Soccer and Softball.

Also, SU Baseball opens their 2011 home schedule on Saturday at 1:00 pm in a non-conference game vs. Texas Lutheran.

Here's a quick recap of last week's action:

BASEBALL: went 0-2 to open the 2011 season. Facing a pair of top 20-ranked teams, Schreiner opened it's season with two tough late inning losses. Against 9th-ranked Birmingham Southern, Schreiner led early, fell behind in the middle and then used a 5-run 8th inning to take a 10-9 lead. Four BSU runs in the top of the ninth resulted in a 13-9 loss. Against 20th-ranked Trinity later in the day, it was a similar scenario. SU led early, fell behind, battled back late only two lose in the bottom of the ninth, 9-8. Sophomore Chris Whitehead, playing his first games in an SU uniform, hit home runs in each game. Sophomore Chase Valdez also had a hot bat with five hits in 9 at bats, driving in 5 runs. Junior Marcus Myhaver was 4-for-10 in the two games. On the mound, SU received strong performances by senior Michael Houser, sophomore Trey Doebbler and freshman Brett Keckler.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: went 0-2 last week. SU played well but came up just short against McMurry, 68-67, and lost 91-84 to Hardin-Simmons. Playing two of the best teams in the ASC West, both of which had handily defeated the Mountaineers a week before, Schreiner turned in two solid performances but couldn't get a win. Schreiner had three chances in the final seconds to score the game-winning basket against McM but couldn't convert. Against HSU, senior Riley Battle's 34 points were not enough to knock off the Cowboys. Battle also scored 20 against McM. Junior Tyrie Prince averaged 15.5 in the two games and had 12 rebounds vs. Hardin-Simmons. Freshman Darren Smith had 19 points in the first game before injuring his ankle. He couldn't play against HSU.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: went 0-2 last week. SU's women's team had a particularly strong showing against ASC West-leader Hardin-Simmons. Schreiner played strong throughout and kept the game close all night. In the final three minutes, it was a one-possession game three different times but the women couldn't quite break through. Freshman Bailey Harris had 15 points and freshman Olivia Swarner had 12 and seven rebounds against the Cowgirls. SU did lose one of its starters, freshman Chelsea Sims, who broke a bone in her foot early in the McMurry game and will miss the rest of the season. SU has a chance to break into the win column Thursday night when the team travels to Alpine to face Sul Ross State.
