Mountaineer Update

from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
January 12, 2011

Welcome back, Schreiner Mountaineers. It's great to have you back on campus and we're very excited about the 2011 year. The basketball teams had a strong week last week and get ready for an ASC road contest (each) Thursday night, before returning home for a string of consecutive contests in the friendly confines of Edington Center. Both teams have their busiest week of the year with five games in the next 10 days (four of them at home). We hope that you can come out and cheer on your SU teams as both are on pace to have their most successful years in the 12 years that we've been an NCAA school.

Here's a quick rundown on last week and a schedule for the week ahead:

MEN'S BASKETBALL: went 2-0 last week. Beat UT-Tyler and LeTourneau each by 15 point margins at home. Schreiner is now 4-4 in the ASC West, just two games out of first place, and 6-6 overall. Against UTT, SU started quickly building an 11-2 lead and repelled the Patriots' attempts at a second half comeback before pulling away late to the convincing win. Freshman Darren Smith led the way Senior Riley Battle (12 pts vs. UTT) scored 24 points in just 22 minutes. Freshman Ethabn Catalani scored 15 and senior Charles Hobbs added 12. During the break, SU had three of its largest-margin victories in the past 10 years - all in a two week span. The Mountaineers are rounding into form and will try to keep their focus on the next game only and stay in the present.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: went 1-1 last week. Lost to UT-Tyler and beat LeTourneau in a nail-biter, 60-58. SU found itself undermanned unexpectedly going into the UT-Tyler game and it showed in the result vs. the highly talented Lady Patriots. Freshman Olivia Swarner had the bulk of the scoring points with 16 on the night. Against LeTourneau, SU was down yet another player. That became even more of an issue as the Mountaineers were plagued by foul trouble all night long. SU also struggled from the free throw line throughout the game, but it didn't stop the home team from rallying in the final minute to escape with the win. SU's guard trio of junior Lia Phillips, sophomore Kristy Guerra and freshman Bailey Harris all played significant roles in the big win.
