Mountaineer Update

from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
March 10, 2011

This weekend (the start of Spring Break) will see our teams in action, two of them right here on campus. Both the baseball and softball teams start ASC West Division play on Friday and Saturday. If you get a chance, we hope you'll cheer on your Mountaineer teams.

Congratulations to senior 1B Oscar Ibieta who was selected as ASC West Division Hitter of the Week. Ibieta went 7-for-11 last weekend, including two home runs, seven runs and six RBI in leading SU to a three game series sweep of East Texas Baptist.

Here's a quick recap of last week's action:

BASEBALL: went 3-2 last week. Defeated ETBU by 10-6, 10-4, and 4-3 scores in the sweep. Lost a doubleheader to DeSales on Monday by 6-5 and 5-0 scores. Schreiner got strong pitching performances, in addition to Ibieta's strong bat, in the sweep of the Tigers. Senior Michael Houser threw a complete game five hitter on Saturday and freshman Daniel Brewer went eight innings as each got their first wins of the year. Brewer held ETBU to just two hits through his first five innings. The Mountaineers held a 5-4 lead in the first game vs. DeSales but the visitors scored two runs in the top of the ninth to get the victory.

SOFTBALL: went 2-4 last week. After a rough opening weekend at the ASC First Pitch Tournament in Dallas, Schreiner rebounding with a two game drilling of Ashford University in their home opener on Monday night. Both junior Becca Hay and sophomore Ally Morris allowed just two hits as each through complete game. SU got a lot of big hits but freshman Kayla Averitt hit her third home run of the young season and Morris helped her own cause with a bases-clearing triple to the wall.

MEN'S TENNIS: went 0-1 last week. Lost to UT-Dallas, 6-3. Sophomore Alex Hammond accounted for two of the three points. He teamed with junior Trey Hernandez for a thrilling 9-8 win at #3 doubles and then rallied from a 6-1 first set loss, to win his match at #5 singles. Senior Tory Manchester got the other point at #2 singles.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: went 0-1 last week. Lost to NCAA D-II St. Mary's, 9-0. Freshman Teresa Gaitan (#3 singles) and sophomore Kelley Spahn (#4 singles) had the most success in their respective matches against the scholarship program.
