Last weekend was a quiet one for our teams but that is certainly not the case this weekend as our spring teams will have very busy schedules. Both the Baseball and Women's and Men's Tennis teams will have home contests this weekend and SU Softball has its home opener on Tuesday at 5:00 pm so please come out and support your Mountaineers.
Before getting to last week's wrap up and the schedule for the week ahead, I'd like to recognize several basketball student-athletes who earned All ASC honors this season. First, senior Riley Battle was named First Team All ASC West Division. He is the first Mountaineer to earn that honor since the American Southwest Conference went to divisional play a decade ago. Freshman Darren Smith became the first SU player since Brian Stickel in 2000 to win ASC Freshmen of the Year. He also earned recognition on the All-Freshmen team and was honorable mention, All ASC West. Joining Darren on that list was junior Tyrie Prince. From the women's team, two freshmen (Olivia Swarner and Bailey Harris) earned HM All ASC West. Congratulations to you all!
Now, on to last week's results:
WOMEN'S GOLF: started their spring season with a third place (out of eight teams) finish at the Schreiner Spring Shootout. Leading the way was sophomore Gabby Rosales who shot 86, 80 and earned All-Tournament honors with her fifth place finish. Junior Sarah Stillwell placed 10th. Two Bandera HS graduates led the team on the first day under very windy conditions. Freshman Lucy Rivera shot 84 and sophomore Katlynd Imbody shot 85.
MEN'S GOLF: finished fourth (out of eight teams) in the Schreiner Spring Shootout. Senior Jay Chapman shot a pair of 75's and was SU's top finisher in 6th place. Sophomore Kelby Ruiz shot a 73 in the second round and freshman Zach Reichenau shot a 74 as SU bounced back from a disappointing first round with a 298 second day score.
MEN'S TENNIS: lost 1-8 at Southwestern. Sophomore Alex Hammond score SU's point with a 1-6, 7-5 (10-5) win at #5 singles. Freshman Kyle Mentzel was edged at #6 singles and the #3 doubles team of Hammond and freshman Dylan Walker lost 9-7.
WOMEN'S TENNIS: lost 0-9 to Southwestern. Senior Michelle Martinez had the strongest showing and battled well but lost 6-4, 6-2 at #1 singles for SU.
