Mountaineer Update

from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
November 14, 2011

With the near-daily fluctuations in our weather, it's clear that winter is near. From a sports perspective, winter starts Tuesday night as the Schreiner Women's Basketball team hosts University of Dallas in a non-conference opening game of the 2011-12 season. 24 hours after the conclusion of that season opener, the Schreiner Men's Basketball team will do the same when the Mountaineers host Trinity University at 7:30 pm on Wednesday. Both games are at Edington Center.

Both teams are coming off improved seasons last year. The SU men had their best season in a decade and have several key returners back but also add several promising new faces who could make an immediate impact this winter. Leading the returners is sophomore Darren Smith. Smith was one of the top scorers in the conference, averaging 17 points per game and was second on the team. SU's third leading scorer is also back. Senior Tyrie Prince averaged 12 ppg, but also led the team in rebounds and steals last year. Junior Manny Longoria, sophomore Ryan Evans and freshman Travis Pflughaupt started in the Mountaineers' exhibition game and sophomore transfer AJ Myres was a scoring threat off the bench.

On the women's side, Schreiner showed major improvement with a very young team last year. It would not be a surprise to see the Mountaineers have a similar season to what the men's program accomplished last year. Still, SU will again be very young. Lia Phillips is the only senior on the team. Sophomore Olivia Swarner was SU's top scorer last year and returns to man the post position. Sophomore Bailey Harris was second on the team in scoring at the shooting guard spot. Three newcomers should round out the starting five but expect plenty of competition from returners and other newcomers for playing time as the season progresses. Freshman Melanie Cavazos will be at the point and freshman Lindsey Peterson will start at the power forward position while junior transfer Jessica Galindo will start the season at the small forward position.

These young teams have a chance for some unprecedented success and need the support of the Schreiner community to start the season. Please come out and cheer on your Schreiner teams as they begin a highly-anticipated 2011-12 campaign over the next two days.
