We hope that everyone in the Schreiner family had a relaxing, satisfying Thanksgiving break with family and friends. For the Schreiner Basketball teams, the break was very short as we had three games last week and another tonight at the Edington Center. The men's game will be at a special time of 5:30 pm with the women's game to follow at approximately 7:30 pm. Both games are against Mississippi College and are conference contests. We hope that you'll be able to come out and support your Mountaineers as both teams have started the season looking like each will be improved (again) over last year's successful squads. Special congratulations go to freshmen post Travis Pflughaupt who was named ASC West Division Player of the Week last week after averaging 24 points, 12 rebounds, 3 steals and 2.5 blocks in SU's opening pair of games.
Here's a quick recap of last week's games:
MEN'S BASKETBALL: went 1-2 to open the season last week. Lost to Trinity, 65-62, won at Southwestern, 86-79, and lost to Louisiana College (95-90). The Mountaineers have been pretty solid in their opening week of games, and are getting outstanding production from three young players. Last year's freshman phenom, Darren Smith, is again putting up big numbers with 17 ppg. This year, he is joined by Pflughaupt (25 ppg, 11 reb.) and sophomore transfer AJ Myres (17 ppg) to form arguably the ASC's top scoring trio. SU lost to Trinity on a three pointer with five seconds left in front of a raucous pro-SU crowd. Then the Mountaineers turned the tables and won at Southwestern in overtime, before opening play with a five point loss to LC.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: went 1-2 last week. Won in overtime against University of Dallas, 77-72, lost by three against Southwestern, 70-67, and then lost to Louisiana College. Schreiner is getting strong play from sophomore Olivia Swarner who is quickly becoming a scoring and rebounding force. On Saturday, she scored 18 points with 16 rebounds. She is getting help from sophomore Bailey Harris (12 ppg) as well as freshmen point guard Melanie Cavazos. SU has a host of new and returning players who are all contributing at different times, but this is definitely a program on the rise. The challenge for the coaches will be to identify those players who will help with the team's defense-first philosophy. The good news also is that this team has been much better on the offensive end but still has to work on limiting turnovers.
