Mountaineer Update

The Volleyball team plays its final home match for nearly a month on Tuesday night at 7:00 pm when SU hosts Concordia-TX.   The home crowd has definitely been a positive for our young team and those who came out last Thursday saw Schreiner make short work of a very solid Howard Payne squad. If you can make it tomorrow night, I know our players and coaches would greatly appreciate your support.

Here's a quick look back at last week's action:

VOLLEYBALL – won 3-0 over Howard Payne. Schreiner dominated the first set, winning 25-14. The second and third sets were much more closely contested and SU had to rally in each set to pull out wins. Freshman Ashley Lyles came up big with 12 kills and 11 digs. Sophomore Jaemi Groves had 29 assists and sophomore Jamie Burns had 12 digs. It was a strong all-around performance by the team and they'll need that again on Tuesday against CTX.

WOMEN'S TENNIS – Schreiner had a strong performance at the ASC Individuals in Abilene, TX last weekend. Senior Lynne Collenback, junior Lindsay Fox and freshman Haley Richards all won their first round matches. Collenback took her second round opponent to the third set and lost by the smallest of margins, 10-8. Junior Kelley Spahn went all the way to the consolation finals before being defeated.

WOMEN'S SOCCER – the hard luck and banged up Mountaineers had another tough road loss at Centenary on Friday. Backup goalkeeper Lizeth De La Torre and her defensive mates took a 0-0 tie into the 2nd overtime period. The team pushed forward going for the win but got caught in a counter attack by the home team and lost 1-0. Schreiner is 0-2 in ASC but have only given up two goals so far. Junior Roni Kloss should return this week which will greatly help SU.

MEN'S SOCCER – Schreiner lost a tough road contest, 1-0, on a goal in the match's final seven minutes of regulation. SU was in good shape but the match was decided on a fluke when sophomore Cody Moles slipped when attempting to clear a ball in the defensive end, the ball went right to a CU player who scored the game-winner.

MEN'S TENNIS – SU, with four freshman and a junior, had a tough time in singles competition. Freshmen Michael Wallace and Hunter Johnson won their first round doubles match. Still, it was a great learning experience for a very young team.
