Mountaineer Update

We are in the "heat" of our fall sports seasons again this weekend. In what is truly a sports oddity (in my experience at least), our soccer teams are both halfway through their respective seasons yet they are (finally) having their home opener tomorrow. Both teams have endured a month on the road, as well as this particularly brutal period of heat and drought and could each use a special Schreiner dose of "home cooking" when they play two matches this weekend. We hope the Schreiner community gets behind the teams for a pair of big contests at the SU Soccer Field Friday and Saturday afternoon.

Here's a quick look back at last week's action:

WOMEN'S GOLF: started their fall season and showed already that this is likely to be the program's best team ever as the year progresses. The 26th-ranked squad finish 2nd among seven D-III schools and fourth overall at the UMHB Invitational. Senior Sarah Stillwell led the way with scores of 83-80 to finish eighth individually. Freshman Melanie Dean overcame a nervous first round to shoot a strong 83 on the second day but the real story was junior Katlynd Imbody who tied her career best score of 83 on the first day and had her collegiate-best two day total of 169.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: had its finest tournament finish in several years as two Mountaineers advanced all the way to the individual semi-finals at the ITA Regionals in Tyler. Senior Lynne Collenback and junior Kelley Spahn each won three straight-set matches before falling in the fourth match of the tournament. Freshman Haley Richards teamed with a player from Trinity in doubles action and the duo advanced all the way to the finals before losing. Sophomore Teresa Gaitan, playing in the #1 spot for SU, also won her first round match.

WOMEN'S SOCCER: won at LeTourneau 1-0 and then lost at unbeaten ETBU, 3-0. The team is still battling injuries but is slowly getting healthier in advance of their home opener. After back-to-back heartbreaking 1-0 losses in their previous two matches (one in double OT), SU turned the tables with its' own 1-0 win as juniors Lacey Warner (goal) and Becky Chiaro (assist) teamed up for the game-winner and sophomore Lizeth De La Torre recorded the shutout. SU is 1-2 in the ASC.

VOLLEYBALL: played possibly its' toughest stretch of opponents of the year and went 0-3. SU lost at Hardin-Simmons, 3-1 and lost to unbeaten McMurry, 3-0 and #9 Southwestern, 3-0. Even in defeat, SU showed great improvement in the matches. The Mountaineers were highly competitive and are seeing improved play from their starters and are building depth as new players are getting extended playing time and excelling when they get the opportunity. SU hopes to get sophomore middle blocker Veronica Castillo back this weekend at some point.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY: freshman Adrian Mercado ran a 27:30 to finish 50th in the Texas D-III Championships but the story was that two new Mountaineers ran for the first time in representing Schreiner. Freshmen Victoria Ponse and Adriana Reamsnyder ran 30:56 and 31:58 in their debuts respectively to bolster the SU effort.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY: senior Tom Pappas led Schreiner's effort with a time of 31:29 over the 8k course to finish 51st, followed by freshman Logan Eckhardt (31:46) and freshman Samuel Porter.

MEN'S SOCCER: lost both road matches last weekend. Schreiner was competitive in each match but lost by 2-0 and 2-1 scores at LETU and ETBU. SU's goal was scored by senior Tanner Overstake vs. ETBU which tied the match, but the contest was decided on a highly questionable penalty kick that was awarded to East Texas Baptist late in the match.
