Mountaineer Update

from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
February 15, 2012

Tonight is opening night for Schreiner Softball. Come over to Mountaineer Field and watch your Mountaineers host Trinity at 5:00 pm for an evening non-conference doubleheader. Schreiner has a strong returning cast and several promising new players so come out and cheer the team to victory(ies). SU Basketball enters its final weekend of the regular season. Tomorrow the teams are at UMHB but Saturday will be Senior Day as we will commemorate the four-year careers of Lia Phillips (WBKB) and Tyrie Prince, Kevin Carrell and Trent Noack (MBKB). The women's game is at 1:00 pm on Saturday with the men's game to follow at 3:00 pm.

Congratulations to the Schreiner Women's Golf team as it played in its first non-Division III tournament and won the event by 22 shots in Laredo on Monday and Tuesday. More information on Schreiner teams below and a schedule for the week ahead:

WOMEN'S GOLF: won the Jack Brown Memorial by 22 shots over a field of scholarship programs – mostly NCAA Division II. Junior Gabby Rosales finished in second place individually after rounds of 84-79 and senior Sarah Stillwell was third after shooting 82-86. Freshmen Melanie Dean and Maddie Scheidler also earned top 10 finishes in the tournament. Texas A&M-Kingsville was second, followed by UT-Brownsville, Texas A&M International and St. Thomas.

BASEBALL: went 1-4 this weekend. Lost 3-2 in the first of a three-game set at East Texas Baptist and then won the nightcap, 5-2. Lost 9-8 on Sunday to the same team. Lost a pair of games to Southwestern yesterday by identical 5-4 scores. All four losses were by one run. Junior Chris Whitehead was leading the team with a .400 batting average going into yesterday's games.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: beat Sul Ross State on the road, 61-53 and then lost a heartbreaker at ASC West Division leading Howard Payne, 51-49. Schreiner led most of the second half but couldn't hold off a late HPU rally in front of a packed house. The 2011-12 team has now tied the school record (NCAA era) for wins in a season – seven. Sophomore Olivia Swarner scored 13 points with 11 rebounds on Saturday. Sophomore Bailey Harris and freshman Lindsey Peterson scored 11 points.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: lost a pair of three-point games, at Sul Ross State (63-66) and at Howard Payne (74-77). Schreiner fell to 1-3 on the year against the two teams at the bottom of the ASC West Division. Freshman Travis Pflughaupt scored 17 points with 13 rebounds and sophomore Darren Smith had 20 points.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: went 0-5 at Abilene Quad. The best match was against fellow ASC rival Hardin-Simmons. Schreiner lost 6-2 but was leading in the remaining match. SU scored wins at #4 (freshman Haley Richards) and #5 (junior Lindsay Fox) singles and was leading at #6 singles (junior Becky Chiaro) when the match was called for darkness. SU was edged at #1 doubles (sophomore Teresa Gaitan/Richards), 8-6, and at #3 doubles (senior Lynne Collenback/Chiaro), 9-7.

MEN'S TENNIS: went 0-5 at Abilene Quad. Schreiner is hampered by only having five players right now so they start every match down, 2-0. Still, SU's extremely young roster had a strong outing against Austin College in losing 7-2. The Mountaineers got wins at #2 singles (freshman Cameron Timber) and at #3 (junior Matt Salazar). Freshman Austin Carrola lost in a third set tiebreaker and both doubles teams lost 8-6.
