The big news, certainly of the week but probably for the year, was the Schreiner Men's Basketball win on Saturday in front of a packed Edington Center. Despite losing starters Darren Smith (early in the game) and Stevan Guerrero (two weeks ago) to injuries, and with starting center Travis Pflughaupt breaking his nose in practice the day before, the gutsy Mountaineers still prevailed over Concordia-TX, 90-76 and earned the school's first postseason bid to the ASC tournament. Schreiner faces ASC East Division champion UT-Dallas on Friday at Noon in Belton, TX. If you can't follow the team to Belton, you can catch the game by going to the SU Athletics website (http://athletics.schreiner.edu) and clicking on the tournament link for internet broadcast and/or live stats. Another big piece of news this week is that Howard Wallace has agreed to become Schreiner Volleyball's new head coach. Wallace has been the first assistant coach at UTSA for the past nine years. The SU golf teams host the Schreiner Spring Shootout at Comanche Trace on Monday and Tuesday mornings. Both tennis teams play two matches at home this Saturday. See below for details.
Here's a quick look back at last week's action:
MEN'S BASKETBALL: senior Tyrie Prince had his best collegiate game in his final appearance at The E, with 28 points, 8 rebounds, five steals, four assists and led SU to the postseason tournament. Schreiner showed tremendous poise in overcoming all kinds of adversity. Pflughaupt still managed 15 points and 12 rebounds, while AJ Myres scored 18 points with six rebounds. Ethan Catalani and Ryan Evans each scored eight points with seven rebounds and Catalani added four assists. Manny Longoria and Mike Stewart combined to fill in for the loss of Smith. This year, SU has set school records for wins (13) and ASC wins (11).
MEN'S GOLF: 20th-ranked Schreiner finished third in the Senator Eddie Lucio Intercollegiate Championship. The Mountaineers were the only non-scholarship team in the field and were in second place after the first round total of 297, just two shots behind host UT-Brownsville. Sophomore Marcus Vargas shot a collegiate-best 71 (-1) to lead the way, followed closely by freshmen Matt Garrett (73) and Zach Oliver (74). The second day wasn't as successful and SU slipped a spot. Oliver and sophomore Zach Reichenau had the best rounds for Schreiner with 76's on day 2.
SOFTBALL: Schreiner lost a season opening doubleheader with Trinity and then split a doubleheader with Southwestern. Yesterday, SU lost to the Pirates 3-2 in the opening game and won, 1-0, in the second game. In the second game, sophomore Ally Morris threw a three-hit shutout. Junior Kelsey Ambrose drove in two of the three runs scored on the day and junior Callie Caesar scored two runs. Against Trinity, senior Ashly Bouthot went 4-for-4 with two doubles in the second game, a 12-5 loss.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: SU came up a bit short on Senior Day, losing to the ASC West Division champs, Concordia-TX, 60-48. Senior Lia Phillips had six points in her final game, to go with three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Sophomore Olivia Swarner had 13 points and eight rebounds. Freshman Lindsey Peterson had eight points and four rebounds. The 2011-12 team tied the school record for wins (7) in the NCAA era in head coach Matt Wallis' second full year.
