Mountaineer Update

from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
February 8, 2012

This week, all sports teams are getting into full swing. Basketball enters its final two weekends of competition with some big games for each team. Baseball and the tennis teams started their seasons last weekend and both are on the road this weekend. Women's Golf has its first spring tournament next Monday and Tuesday and Softball has their first home games next Wednesday. Men's Golf will start it's spring season the following week.

Congratulations to sophomore Darren Smith of the SU Men's Basketball team. He was named ASC West Division Player of the Week last week and helped lead Schreiner to back-to-back wins over McMurry and Hardin-Simmons while averaging 25 points, nearly six rebounds, 2.5 assists and two steals in the two games.

Here's a quick recap of last week's action and a look at the schedule for the next week:

MEN'S BASKETBALL: defeated McMurry (81-66) and Hardin-Simmons (81-76). It was the first time in the NCAA era that Schreiner Basketball had completed that double. Schreiner played some of it's best basketball of the year and took control in each game with big scoring runs in the second half. In addition to Smith's heroics which are noted above, SU got big performances from many players, including freshman Travis Pflughaupt (11 points, 12.5 rebounds, 2 steals), senior Tyrie Prince (12 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.5 steals), freshman Stevan Guerrero (16 points, 4.5 rebounds) and freshman Jerome Harrell (4.5 points, 8.5 rebounds). The team can't afford any letup this week as we are in the home stretch for the postseason.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: played well but faded late in losses to McMurry and Hardin-Simmons. SU kept both games close against two of the best teams in the ASC. Leading the way was again sophomore Olivia Swarner (12.5 points, 9 rebounds), freshman Karisa Cantu (14 points, six rebounds, 4.5 assists), sophomore Bailey Harris (8.5 points) and freshman Lindsey Peterson is coming on and averaged (9 points and five rebounds).

WOMEN'S TENNIS: lost their season opener to NAIA scholarship Our Lady of the Lake, 8-1. Senior Lynne Collenback scored SU's point with a win at #2 singles. She won her match in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2. Collenback and junior Becky Chiaro lost their match at #3 doubles, 8-5. Sophomore Teresa Gaitan played #1 and battled but came up just short, 6-2, 6-4 in her match. Junior Lindsay Fox lost at #5 singles, 6-1, 6-4 and Chiaro lost at #6 singles, 6-4, 6-1.

BASEBALL: lost a doubleheader to #21-ranked Trinity, 6-2 and 12-4. Schreiner played the Tigers close throughout the first game. Junior Matt Valley was pitching a solid game and trailed only 3-2 going into the six inning but TU scored 3 insurance runs. Senior Justin Martinez drove in a both SU runs with two hits. In the second game, but Trinity got to SU sophomore starter Daniel Brewer early and got out to a big lead. Martinez again had a pair of hits and senior Brad Thomas drove in three of SU's four runs.

MEN'S TENNIS: lost their season opening match to NAIA scholarship Our Lady of the Lake. OLLU got the best of an extremely young SU squad. Freshmen duo Austin Carrola and Cameron Timber played the best match at #1 doubles, but came up on the low end of an 8-5 result. SU has five first year players and one returning junior on their roster.
