Mountaineer Update

from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
January 31, 2012

The big news from last week was Schreiner University's acceptance into the prestigious Southern Collegiate Athletic Association starting with the 2013-14 academic year. Schreiner joins Trinity University, Southwestern University, Austin College, University of Dallas, Colorado College and Centenary College with one or more other schools likely to be added by the time we officially join this elite league. While this is certainly exciting news relating to the future of Schreiner and Schreiner Athletics, we still have a lot going on this semester. Basketball season is heading into its final three weeks of the regular season. Both Mountaineer teams return home after a tough road trip to Abilene but get a chance to face the same pair of teams in front of the home fans at the Edington Center on Thursday and Saturday. Like we did once earlier this season, the order of games on Thursday and Saturday have been switched with the guys going early and the women playing second. See below for the schedule. Also, softball, baseball, women's and men's tennis and women's and men's golf have started or will soon start their spring seasons. It's opening week for SU Women's and Men's Tennis (Thursday at 2 pm at the Cree Tennis Center) and Baseball (Saturday at 1:00 pm at Trinity). It's a busy time for our Mountaineers and SU fans. Hope you can come out and support our student-athletes!

Here's a recap of last week's games:

MEN'S BASKETBALL: lost close games at McMurry in overtime and to Hardin-Simmons by three points. The two games had a lot of similarities, and unfortunately, both resulted in tough losses. SU fell behind McM by 17 points before rallying in the second half. Sophomore Darren Smith scored 32 points in the second half and overtime periods but Schreiner still came short 115-111. At HSU, the Mountaineers got in a 22-point second half deficit before rallying to within one point in the final minute but couldn't get a lead in a 95-92 loss. Smith scored 56 points in the two games. Freshman Travis Pflughaupt averaged more than 20 points per game last week. SU got strong performances from senior Tyrie Prince (14 ppg) and sophomore Ethan Catalani (18.5 ppg).

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: lost at McMurry and at Hardin-Simmons. Schreiner played both teams tough, but had offensive slumps in each game that were too much to overcome. Defensively, SU continues to be tough to contend with, allowing less than 60 ppg. Sophomore Olivia Swarner averaged 12 points and 6.5 rebounds per game last week, including 14 points and 9 rebounds in the loss at HSU. Freshman Karisa Cantu also scored 14 points on Saturday and sophomore Bailey Harris averaged 3.0 assists per game last week.
