Mountaineer Update

from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
October 11, 2012

Before I get into recapping the results from the past week of more of competition involving our sports teams, I'd like to recognize two Mountaineer student-athletes who achieved American Southwest Conference distinction recently. Senior Gabby Rosales was recognized as ASC Women's Golfer of the Week late last month for being the top D-III finisher at the UMHB Fall Invitational. More recently, senior goalkeeper Tim Martinez was named this week's ASC Defensive Player of the Week in men's soccer. Martinez had 11 saves and one assist as SU won a key pair of road matches last weekend. He had five saves in a 1-0 shutout win at Howard Payne and had six saves and an assist on the game winning goal in a 2-1 win at Hardin-Simmons.

Here's a recap of recent action involving our teams:

MEN'S SOCCER - as noted above, went 2-0 on a road swing at HSU and HPU. SU has won three matches in a row and has vaulted from 12th in the ASC standings just two weeks ago into 5th in the league with three weekends remaining in the regular season. SU (4-4 in ASC) rallied from a 1-0 deficit midway through the second half at HSU on a goal by freshman Ryan Hernandez to tie the match and send it into overtime. In the second overtime, freshman Fernando Albiter scored the game winner off a long punt by Martinez.

VOLLEYBALL - went 3-4 over the past two weeks of action and it currently in third place in the ASC West. Having already eclipsed the win total from last year, the Mountaineers enter a stretch of matches where the team has a chance to play a spot in the postseason tournament. Schreiner is in a tight race for that final spot and plays at both Howard Payne and Concordia over the next eight days as well as having matches at ASC West leader HSU and a match early next week against Sul Ross State. The team's 3-3 record at the ASC Crossovers that past two weekends was third best in the ASC West.

MEN'S TENNIS - ended its fall season with an 8-8 record at the ITA Regionals in an event that was dramatically short because of heavy rains in northeast TX. Sophomore Stephen Rogers probably had the biggest win of the trip, when he took a three-set win over a ranked player from Howard Payne on that first day of action.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY - the SU team finished 12th at the UIW Invitational in a field mostly made up on scholarship programs. Freshman Kevin Perez has led the way each of the last two races and his time last weekend in San Antonio was the best for a Mountaineer runner in more than three years (at the 8k distance).

WOMEN'S SOCCER - defeated Louisiana College 1-0, lost at #4 Hardin-Simmons and at Howard Payne. The win against LC was impressive as the Mountaineers had to play the final 60 minutes a player down after one of SU's players was ejected. Still, sophomore Paige Horner scored her first shutout and her defensive mates rose up to meet the challenge. Freshman Kelcie Nesbitt's first half goal (off an assist by senior Amanda Moon) was the difference.

MEN'S GOLF - fell from the national rankings after a seventh place finish at the Al Jones Memorial. Sophomore Cheyne Kendall continued to lead the team and his 77-75 scores put him in 13th place in the event. After a strong showing in the team's first fall tournament - being the top ASC finisher, the Mountaineers could finish no better than sixth among ASC teams in this tournament.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY - freshman Courtney Van Ness joined the team mid-season but is making her impression felt and has been SU's top runner each of her first two competitions.
