Mountaineer Update

from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
October 18, 2012

We're moving into late October and both our Men's Soccer and Volleyball teams are battling for a postseason berth. Today, both soccer teams host ETBU and it will be the final home match of the year for each team. Seniors playing in their final match include (from Women's Soccer) Desiree Frausto, Roni Kloss, Becky Chiaro, Lacey Warner, Amanda Moon and Haley Powers and (Men's Soccer) Tim Martinez, Jorge Ramos, Ivan Benitez, Gio Benitez, Josh Vela, Trevor Brown and David Machado.

On Saturday, SAB is sponsoring a pregame Tailgate before the volleyball match vs. Texas Lutheran at Edington Center. We hope Schreiner fans can take in all the matches and support our teams as they press forward hopefully for a spot in the postseason. One last event for your calendar is Saturday at 11:00 am when the SU Softball team holds its Alumni Game at the Mountaineer Softball Field.

Here's a quick recap from last week's action:

MEN'S SOCCER – defeated Texas Lutheran in their only match, 1-0, to run their win streak to four straight. Freshman Ryan Hernandez scored the game winner with a beautiful header off a tremendous throw in by senior Josh Vela. Senior Tim Martinez and the SU defense scored their second straight shutout. With the win, SU now is tied for fourth place in the ASC standings with two weekends left.

WOMEN'S GOLF – finished in third place at the Schreiner Fall Classic. Schreiner is currently ranked #3 in the nation but lost to NCAA Division II St. Mary's and 20th-ranked Trinity earlier this week. Senior Gabby Rosales finished in fourth place with rounds of 78-82. Freshman Sierra Sanchez, playing in her first collegiate tournament, also shot 160 (82-78) to tie for fourth and led the SU White team to a fifth place finish out of eight teams in the field. Sophomore Melanie Dean shot 82-81 to earn a top-10 finish.

VOLLEYBALL – lost at top-ranked Hardin-Simmons, 3-0, and defeated Sul Ross State in Alpine, 3-1. Schreiner is 2-1 in a key four match road swing and currently holds the final spot for a postseason berth. Sophomore Callie Du Perier had 15 kills and 21 digs to lead the way at SRSU. Junior Jaemi Groves had 41 assists. SU plays at 4th-place Concordia tonight before coming home for Saturday's match vs. TLU.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY – freshman Kevin Perez continues to improve and led the young Mountaineer team to a fifth place finish at the Concordia Invitational. Perez ran the 5k course in 17:45 for the best SU time in more than three years. He was followed closely by freshman Caleb McDaniel at 18:19.

WOMEN'S SOCCER – lost to Texas Lutheran, 2-0, in only match of the week. Sophomore Lizeth De La Torre joined the team and played her first match in nearly a year and had six saves. Seniors Roni Kloss and Haley Powers had SU's two shots in the match.
