Mountaineer Update

from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
October 26, 2012

This is the final weekend of the regular season for our fall sports teams. Our men's and women's cross country teams run at the ASC championships tomorrow morning in Clinton, MS. Last week, our volleyball team clinched its first-ever berth in the ASC postseason championships which take place next week. The team has its final home match tomorrow at 4:00 pm in Edington Center vs. Sul Ross State. And our men's soccer team has a chance to clinch a spot in the ASC postseason championships with one more win either today or tomorrow (on the road). The last time the Mountaineers made the postseason tournament was 2009 when the team advanced to the semi-finals. Also, our men's and women's basketball teams are now in their preseason getting ready to their first regular season games in a couple of weeks. Congratulations goes to junior outside hitter Brittany Boyett of the volleyball team for earning ASC West Division Defensive Player of the Week last week. She had 53 digs in two matches to help SU earn that first postseason spot.

Here's a quick recap from last week:

VOLLEYBALL – defeated Concordia-TX, 3-2, in Austin to lock up the first postseason bid in the NCAA era. Lost to TLU, 3-2. In the CTX match, an 11-2 run in the crucial fifth set turned a 5-3 deficit into a 14-7 lead. Sophomore Callie Du Perier had six kills out of seven points to spark the rally. She ended up with 22 kills in the match. Boyett had 13 kills to go with 24 digs. Junior Veronica Castillo had eight kills and a team best .318 attack percentage. Junior Jaemi Groves had 45 assists, 20 digs and five aces.

MEN'S SOCCER – beat East Texas Baptist 4-2, to run their win streak to five straight matches. Schreiner (6-4 in ASC) got first half goals from freshman Orlando Sanchez and sophomore Justin Edwards and second half goals by seniors Ivan and Gio Benitez (no relation) to overcome an early deficit. The Mountaineers currently are in fourth place in the 13-team league going into the final weekend of play.

WOMEN'S GOLF - #10-ranked SU finished in fourth place at the Alamo City Classic, behind three other nationally-ranked teams. After a disastrous first day, Schreiner rallied with a 322 second day score, led by freshman Mariah Silvas who shot a career best 78. Senior Gabby Rosales shot back-to-back 80's to finish in 7th place overall, followed by sophomore Melanie Dean who shot 85-80.

WOMEN'S SOCCER – won 1-0 over East Texas Baptist. An early goal by freshman Bria Howard was all that the SU defense needed in getting a victory in the final home match for six Schreiner seniors. Junior Lizeth De La Torre got the shutout win.

MEN'S GOLF – finished sixth out of eight teams at the Alamo City Classic. Freshman Phillip Stewart continued his strong first semester with a team-best total of 147 (75-72) to finish seventh individually. Senior Kelby Ruiz was next after rounds of 78-77.
