Mountaineer Update

from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
September 13, 2012

We're entering a very busy weekend on campus for our sports teams. Both soccer teams open their conference seasons with home games on both Friday and Saturday afternoon and Schreiner fans also get our first look at our 2012 volleyball team as the squad opens ASC play on both Friday night and Saturday afternoon with a pair of matches. Both cross country teams are racing on Friday evening in San Antonio while our Men's and Women's Tennis teams start fall play today, tomorrow and Saturday in Tyler.

Here's a quick rundown of action from the past two weekends and the schedule of upcoming events over the next week:

VOLLEYBALL: went 3-1 against non-conference D-III competition this past weekend at the Austin College Tournament (including going 2-1 vs. future SCAC opponents) and was 1-3 against scholarship teams last weekend at the TAMU-Kingsville Tournament. At 4-4 so far in 2012-13, Schreiner Volleyball is off to its best start since 2008. Leading the way continues to be junior Jaemi Groves, sophomore Callie Du Perier, junior Jamie Burns and junior Veronica Castillo. Schreiner hosts the preseason ASC West Division favorites (Hardin-Simmons) on Friday night in Edington.

MEN'S GOLF: SU finished in third place at the John Bohmann Memorial Invitational in Seguin this week, setting three school records in the process. SU shot 296-293-293 to set the 54-hole team record and sophomore Cheyne Kendall shot 74-70-70 to finish fourth individually and set records for low 54 hole total and best third round score. Schreiner finished first among the five ASC schools in the field. Sophomore Jimmy Keener and freshman Phillip Stewart finished tied for 15th at 222.

WOMEN'S SOCCER: went 0-3-1 over the opening two weeks. Schreiner lost to NAIA UH-Victoria (3-0), tied Centenary (1-1), lost to NCAA D-II Texas Wesleyan (4-0) and to University of Dallas (4-1). Senior Lacey Warner scored the goal in the tie with Centenary and senior Amanda Moon scored the goal against UD. Sophomore goalkeeper Paige Horner has recorded 44 saves this season.

MEN'S SOCCER: went 0-4 in the first two weeks. SU lost to 2-0 to UH-Victoria (NAIA), 1-0 in overtime to Centenary, 2-0 to the University of Dallas and 1-0 to Huston-Tillotson. Schreiner has had success getting shots against their opponents but haven't been able to convert the chances yet this year. In both the loss to Centenary and the loss at UD, SU outshot the opponents but took hard luck losses in each.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY: finished sixth at the TLU Warm-Up Invitational and fifth at the HSU Invitational the past two weekends. Sophomore Kevin Perez was the Schreiner top finisher at TLU while sophomore Alex Guzman was first at HSU.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY: Schreiner finished eighth at the TLU Warm-Up. Sophomore Adriana Mercado was SU's top racer in each of the events.
