Mountaineer Update

from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
September 21, 2012

SU's sports teams are on the road this weekend. Here's a look back at contests that took place in the past week:

WOMEN'S TENNIS - had a strong first weekend of the 2012-13 season at the ASC Individuals. Five women made it to the semifinals of the main draw, including junior Teresa Gaitan who lost in the finals of flight #6. Senior Kelley Spahn made it to the finals in flight #5 singles and teamed with freshman Karyn Swink to earn a spot in the finals at #2 doubles. Overall, SU players posted 12 main draw wins in a breakout performance by a very young Mountaineer team.

MEN'S TENNIS - also had a solid start to the 2012-13 season. Posted five main draw wins and seven consolation bracket wins, including both sides of the consolation finals where junior Nathan West beat freshman Marco Hinojosa in the finals of flight #7 singles. Hinojosa also teamed with freshman Christian Casillas to advance to the semifinals in #4 doubles action before losing to the #2 seeded team.

MEN'S SOCCER - beat Concordia 3-2 in overtime, lost to UMHB 4-1 and lost at UTD 5-0. In the CTX match, one sophomore and two freshmen carried the offensive load. Sophomore Justin Edwards assisted on all three goals. Two were scored by freshman Ryan Hernandez and the game winner in overtime was scored by freshman Cody Hollingshead.

VOLLEYBALL - lost to Hardin-Simmons, 3-2, lost to Howard Payne 3-0, and lost at TLU, 3-1. Against HSU, Schreiner was facing the preseason favorites and played outstanding volleyball. Schreiner won two of the first three sets and had a great chance in the fourth but HSU rallied and won the fifth set, 15-13. Junior Brittany Boyett and sophomore Callie Du Perier each had 15 kills in that match. Junior Amanda Sorenson added nine kills. Junior Jaemi Groves had 46 assists and junior Jamie Burns had 21 digs.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY - Schreiner was led by a sophomore and two freshmen at the UTSA Ricardo Romo Invitational. Sophomore Alex Guzman was first followed by freshman Caleb McDaniel and freshman Kevin Perez.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY - sophomore Adriana Mercado was again SU's top finisher at the UTSA Ricardo Romo Invitational. She was followed by sophomore Victoria Ponse and sophomore Kathrine Reamsnyder.

WOMEN'S SOCCER - lost to Concordia 4-0, lost to UMHB 5-0, and lost at UTD 4-0. Injuries and squad size are proving to be tough hurdles to overcome for SU. In each match, Schreiner was either tied or down just 1-0 but the opponents were able to find success in the second half of each match.
