A couple of congratulations to start this week’s update. First, to the SU Women’s
Tennis team. If you’ve been reading the updates often, you know that SU’s team has
already had a remarkable year. Things only got better this past weekend as the team
won its third ASC match and - in doing so - qualified for the ASC Championship Tournament
for the first time since 2001. The team has a big home match this weekend to determine
where the Mountaineers will be seeded for the tournament. Congratulations to junior
Teresa Gaitan for earning ASC Women’s Tennis player of the week. Also, congratulations
to the SU Men’s Golf team as they won the West Region Invitational on Tuesday. The
win is the first for the Mountaineers. Both golf teams have already qualified for
the ASC Championship Tournament and leave for that event on Saturday.
It will be another busy weekend for SU sports and the spring season winds down. Here’s a quick recap of last week:
WOMEN’S TENNIS - went 3-0 last week, including ASC wins over Sul Ross State (7-2) and Howard Payne (9-0). The squad also won a non-conference battle against Southwestern (5-4). The team continues to make big strides on the year. Currently, SU is 3-1 in ASC play and 11-6 overall. Both marks are significantly better than any year in recent memory and there’s still another match and the postseason to go. Saturday’s match vs. UMHB will also be Senior Day for Kelley Spahn, Gaitan (who is leaving SU to pursue her Engineering degree) and Becky Chiaro. See match schedule info below.
MEN’S GOLF – won the West Region Invitational in Georgetown. The Mountaineers shot the tournament low round (298) in the second round on Monday and took the lead from Trinity and five other schools. In the third round, SU shot its highest score of the event (308) but still kept a nine stroke margin over 20th-ranked Southwestern with Trinity 12 shots back in third place. The win is the first for SU. Sophomore Cheyne Kendall finished second individually and sophomore Jimmy Keener was fourth.
MEN’S TENNIS – defeated Sul Ross State (8-1), beat Howard Payne (6-3) and Southwestern (6-3). It was the most impressive week for SU men’s tennis in years as the Mountaineers shot back into ASC postseason consideration. The two ASC wins exceed all by one team in the last six years for SU and Schreiner has one match remaining. A win would get the team into the championship tournament for the first time since 2006. Sophomore Austin Carrola has stepped up his game and sophomore Stephen Rogers had his best match of the year in Saturday’s win.
WOMEN’S GOLF – finished fifth in the West Region Invitational. Monday marked the first time all year that the team struggled on the same day together. Sophomore Melanie Dean had the low round of 85. That result left SU in sixth but the Mountaineers tied for the low round of the day on Tuesday to move up to 5th. Senior Gabby Rosales had a remarkable second round, shooting a personal best and program record-breaking 72 (even par) that was the best round of the entire tournament by five shots. She vaulted from 31st place after the first round to second place.
BASEBALL – lost a three-game series to defending ASC champion Concordia-TX. Scores were 7-3, 6-3 and 12-4. SU hit the ball well but couldn’t get the timely hits and fell prey to one bad inning each game. CTX was just able to do a better job in key situations than Schreiner was and it resulted in the sweep.
SOFTBALL – lost two games to NAIA (scholarship) Our Lady of the Lake in non-conference action. Schreiner got hits, but like the baseball team, couldn’t get the key hits to get on the scoreboard. Scores were 7-0 and 8-0.
