Mountaineer Update
from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
April 2, 2013

April has arrived and we’re now in the closing weeks of our respective sports seasons.  Still three big weekends remain.   This week will have several home sports contests, starting tomorrow with both tennis teams and softball competing on campus.   Baseball also hosts a three-game series with the defending ASC West champions starting Friday.   There are plenty of chances to see some terrific sports action, and it is all for free.

Here’s a quick recap of last week’s action:

WOMEN’S TENNIS – went 1-0 last week with a big road win at Hardin-Simmons.  For the first time in many years, perhaps ever, Schreiner powered past HSU, 7-2.  It was a dominant performance as SU was 2-1 in doubles and then had five straight set wins in five completed matches.  Senior Kelley Spahn and freshman Karyn Swink won their singles matches, dropping just one game between them.  Junior Teresa Gaitan and freshman Brooke Ohlman each won their match, 6-1, 6-1 and freshman Leanna Haynes cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 win over a tough opponent at #1 singles.  SU has a big weekend coming up with three matches in a 48-hour span.

BASEBALL – went 1-2 over the weekend against HSU.  Lost the first game of the road series, 9-7, but freshman Matt Barnett did a great job in relief and gave the Mountaineers a chance to rally.  In the second game, junior transfer Joe Osinski reaffirmed his status as the ace of the staff with a complete game victory, 3-2.  In the finale, one costly inning was all that kept the Mountaineers from winning the series.  HSU rallied late to win 7-5.  Still, the Mountaineers continued to show strong improvement and the bats are heating up as the season goes on.   SU had 39 hits in the three games.   Freshman Marco Carreon had six and junior Chase Valdez five in Saturday’s doubleheader.

MEN’S TENNIS – went 0-1 last week, losing its only match at HSU, 6-3.  The young Schreiner squad continues to show marked improvement and took three points against the Cowboys.  That ties the most points that a men’s tennis team has won against the Cowboys since at least the early 2000’s.   The #3 doubles team of junior Nathan West and freshman Brice Conoly gutted out a tough 9-7 win.  Freshmen Josh Ramirez and Marco Hinojosa won grueling three set contests at #4 and #6 singles and Conoly was nipped at #5 in three sets.

SOFTBALL – went 0-4 last weekend against HSU, but showed great signs of improvement.   The Mountaineers were shutout in three of the games but are hitting the ball better and having many more chances to get on the board.  Saturday’s games were particularly close as the Cowgirls won 5-3 and 3-0.  Senior Callie Caesar had a big day with five hits in the doubleheader.
