Mountaineer Update
from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
April 24, 2013

Congratulations to Schreiner Men’s Tennis.  Due to Texas Lutheran playing an ineligible player, Schreiner earned a win in their match and improved to 3-2 in ASC play.  That change moved the Mountaineers into the third position and qualified SU for the ASC Championship Tournament for the first time since 2006.  For the first time since 2001, both Schreiner tennis teams will advance to the postseason.   Both teams will be in action against the ASC East Division #2 seed on Friday in Belton.  Good luck to both teams!

Here’s a quick recap of last week’s action:

BASEBALL- won one of three games vs. Sul Ross State.  Lost the first two games of the series, 20-8 and 4-2 but bounced back to win the series finale, 8-3.   The second game of the series was especially tough for SU.  Senior Barrett Houser pitched well as did junior Colton Mendenhall but three errors led to three unearned runs.  Schreiner outhit SRSU 9-8 in the game.  The series finale was also the final game of the season.  Seven Mountaineers were playing their final game, but there were also a lot of other distractions as well.  Three players (seniors Chris Whitehead and Pete Trevino and junior Chase Valdez) were all going for the single season hit record and SU was also looking to break the single season team defense record.  Both Whitehead and Trevino tied for the single season record with 57 hits and Valdez finished runner-up in the conference for the batting title (.399).  SU did in fact break the single season team defensive record (.953).  Meanwhile, senior Matt Valley went 8-2/3 innings in his final start and allowed two earned runs to earn the victory.  SU improved four game in the win/loss column this year.  Statistically, the Mountaineers showed major improvement in both hitting (.285 average/6th  out of 14 teams in ASC) and defense (8th of 14).  It was the best season finish in both categories in many years.

SOFTBALL – lost four games to Concordia-TX.  The best game of the series was the finale.  Three players were wearing the maroon and white for the final time (Ally Morris, Callie Caesar and Shelby Kimmons).  Morris did very well in her final start, holding CTX to just two runs.  Caesar had two hits and Kimmons had one in their final game but the Mountaineers came up just short in a 2-1 loss.   Kimmons finished the season with the best batting average (.253), narrowly edging junior Victoria Alcozer (.248).  Morris had the top ERA on the squad at 4.73.  Although SU loses three of its starters to graduation, first year head coach Jessica Peterka already has six recruits committed for next year and is looking to add several more before the start of the 2013-14 year to go along with the returners to the program.
