Mountaineer Update

from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
February 7, 2013

We’re now fully into our overlap season where the winter sports are winding down and spring sports are getting up to full speed. Our basketball teams have their final road trip of the season this week and our tennis teams have their home opener on Friday at 3:00 pm at the Cree Tennis Center. Both golf teams start their season early next week in Laredo.

Here’s a quick recap of last week’s action:

WOMEN’S TENNIS: won their season opener over NAIA Our Lady of the Lake, 7-2. Freshman Leanna Haynes lost only three games in earning wins at #1 doubles (with freshman partner Shelby Thompson) and #1 singles. Junior Theresa Gaitan and freshman Brooke Ohlman also won both of their matches. Also winning in singles action were freshman Karyn Swink and Madeline Scotch. Schreiner hosts NCAA Division II St. Mary’s in their home opener on Friday.

BASEBALL: went 2-2 including a 2-1 series at Southwestern on Friday and Saturday. Freshman Matt Barnett earned the win in relief in Friday’s 9-7 victory, pitching 3-2/3 innings. In Saturday’s 5-3 win, senior Daniel Brewer went 6-2/3 innings, allowing two earned runs, and got the victory. Freshman Charlie Stewart earned a pair of saves in less than 24 hours. Offensively, SU is led by senior Chris Whitehead who has eight hits in four games and is batting .571. Senior Lonnie Garcia had six hits and is batting .400 and freshman Tyler Ince is batting .417.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: went 1-1, soundly defeating Sul Ross State and losing by eight points to top-ranked Howard Payne. The Mountaineers continue to play hard-nosed basketball and display strong intensity on both ends of the court. In a 24-point win over SRSU, freshman Kelsie had a career game with 30 points, including 8 three pointers. Freshman Lanie Alaniz made six treys and scored 18 points and junior Bailey Harris had six assists and six rebounds. In Saturday’s loss, senior Colby Adolph had a career day with 22 points and 13 rebounds. She’s had 22 rebounds in her last two games. Sophomore Lindsey Peterson had 12 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. With the win, SU set an NCAA high for overall wins with nine this season.

MEN’S BASKETBALL: went 1-1, beating SRSU and losing to Howard Payne in double overtime. Against the Lobos, SU got 21 points and six rebounds each from junior A.J. Myres and sophomore Stevan Guerrero in the win. Guerrero had the hot first half scoring 17 points and Myres was the scoring leader in the second half. In Saturday’s loss, Myres scored 24 and Guerrero 17, but Guerrero fouled out late in regulation and his loss hurt in the overtimes. Junior Ethan Catalani scored 15 points off the bench but SU was only 26-43 from the free throw line.

MEN’S TENNIS: lost season opener, 7-2, to NAIA Our Lady of the Lake. Schreiner got wins at #3 doubles (8-3) by sophomore Steven Rogers and freshman Josh Ramirez, and at #6 singles as freshman Christian Casillas won his match in three sets, 6-3, 5-7, (10-8). SU’s #2 doubles team of junior Nathan West and freshman Brice Conoly were edged 9-8 (9-7) and freshman Marco Hinojosa lost a close match at #4 singles, 7-5, 6-4.
