Mountaineer Update

Mountaineer Update

from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
February 21, 2013

The big news is that for the second straight year, Schreiner Men’s Basketball is headed to the ASC Championship Tournament. Our guys are the west division #4 seed and face the east division #1 seed and tournament host (UT-Dallas) on Friday night at 7:30 pm. You can go to the ASC website (  to watch the game online (for free) and also get live stats. The winner advances to the semifinals on Saturday in Richardson, TX. Also, congratulations to both senior Gabby Rosales and sophomore Cheyne Kendall. Each was named ASC Golfer of the Week for their success in leading their respective teams at the Jack Brown Memorial Invite last week. We have a lot of home action over the next week so there will be plenty of chances to come out and cheer on your Mountaineer student athletes.

Here’s an update on our sports action from the past week:

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: ended the season with a convincing 71-56 win over Hardin-Simmons on Senior Day. The successful four-year careers of seniors Colby Adolph, Jasmin Copeland, Mari Duran and the successful three year careers of seniors Jessica Galindo and Kristy Guerra came to a conclusion with the end of that game. All five have made significant contributions and Copeland came up big in her final game. She scored all 14 of her points (and had 9 rebounds) in the second half of Saturday’s win to snuff out any chance of an HSU comeback. We congratulate all five players and wish them great success upon graduation.

BASEBALL: lost the first two games of last weekend’s series with ETBU, 8-7 and 4-2 but bounced back to win the finale, 6-4. Schreiner got strong pitching performances from junior Daniel Brewer, senior Barrett Houser and junior Colton Mendenhall. Freshman Charlie Stewart has already racked up three saves in the first two weeks of the season. Freshman Ryan Martin and senior Pete Trevino had big weekends and lead the team in hitting. Senior Chris Whitehead and freshmen Tyler Ince also have batting averages of .370 or better.

MEN’S TENNIS: lost to Dallas Baptist, 5-4. SU got big wins at #3 doubles (junior Nathan West, freshman Brice Conoly) and #5 (freshman Christian Casillas) and #6 singles (Conoly). Senior Matt Salazar’s three set win at #4 singles put SU within a point of victory, but the Mountaineers came achingly close at #2 doubles (sophomore Stephen Rogers and freshman Thomas Lozano) and at #3 singles (freshman Marco Hinojosa) but couldn’t get the elusive point.

MEN’S BASKETBALL: lost on senior day to Hardin-Simmons. SU played well in the first half and took a 48-35 lead into the locker room but HSU came out and controlled the game in the second half. Senior Manny Longoria, playing his last game at Edington Center, finished in style with 17 points.

SOFTBALL: Schreiner opened its 2013 season with 10-0 and 11-1 losses to Southwestern. In the first game, sophomore Jana Masters was doing well and only trailed 2-0 going into the top of the seventh inning before the Pirates scored eight times in the inning. Junior Victoria Alcozer had two hits in the first game and senior Callie Caesar had a pair of hits in the second game.
