For the first time in several weeks, it will be quiet around campus this weekend as our spring sports teams are all on the road. Congratulations to the 8th-ranked Schreiner Women’s Golf team for winning their first tournament of 2013. Senior Gabby Rosales tied for individual medalist – her second career title. She set the school record for low round (75) and the team set the school record of 316. Senior Kelby Ruiz tied for second place in the men’s tournament, shooting a career low of 71 (-1) and also had a career-best individual finish as SU finished in second place as a team. Also, congratulations to the Schreiner Women’s Tennis team as they went undefeated last weekend. With five wins already in 2013, this is the most successful team in the NCAA era and the team still has most of its season ahead of it.
Here’s a quick rundown of last week’s activity:
WOMEN’S GOLF – Schreiner continued to show that they are deserving of a high national ranking with a five stroke win in the Schreiner Spring Shootout at Comanche Trace. SU defeated two other nationally-ranked programs in Trinity and Rhodes as well as the five other teams in the event. In addition to Rosales’ record-breaking performance, freshman Mariah Silvas tied her career low of 78 and had her best individual finish (T-3rd). Sophomore Melanie Dean tied her season low of 81 and freshman Sierra Sanchez shot 82 to lead the Mountaineers.
WOMEN’S TENNIS – went 4-0 last weekend. Defeated Sul Ross State (8-1), Ozarks (9-0), East Texas Baptist (8-1) and Texas Lutheran (5-4). SU is the only team to have defeated TLU so far this year. With such dominating performances all weekend, it’s hard to pick out special performances, but senior Kelley Spahn’s effort vs. TLU at #5 singles is noteworthy. SU rallied from a 4-1 deficit to tie the score and the match came down to her contest. She fell behind early in the first set, 4-1, but rallied to a 7-5 win. She lost the second set, 6-2, but in the third set tiebreak, she took a 7-2 lead, and had three match points at 9-6, lost four straight points but then won the final three points to clinch her match and the overall win, 13-11. It was a great overall performance by the entire team all weekend.
MEN’S GOLF – continued its strong spring season with a second place finish out of nine schools at the Schreiner Spring Shootout. 15th-ranked Mary Hardin-Baylor was the only team to best the Mountaineers and SU clipped nationally-ranked Trinity by four shots. In addition to Ruiz’ breakout performance, sophomore Jimmy Keener shot 75, freshman Phillip Stewart shot 76 as did sophomore Ian Davis. Schreiner’s high score was a 77 which was the best of any team in the tournament by at least four shots.
MEN’S TENNIS – went 2-2 last weekend. Beat Sul Ross State, 7-2, lost to Ozarks, beat East Texas Baptist (5-4) and lost to Texas Lutheran. Like the women’s team, there were plenty of positives in last weekend’s matches. Highlights begin with senior Matt Salazar in the win over ETBU. With SU down 4-3, Salazar needed to win to extend the match. He lost the first set, 6-4, but won the second set 6-3. With everything on the line, he cruised to a 6-1 win in the third set so put the decisive point on freshman Christian Castillo’s racquet and Castillo delivered a straight set win, 7-6, 6-3.
SOFTBALL – lost a doubleheader at NAIA Our Lady of the Lake and lost a doubleheader at Trinity last night. In last night’s losses, Schreiner showed significant improvement falling 8-5 in the first game and 7-2 in the second.
BASEBALL – lost a three-game series to LeTourneau and lost to #11 Trinity. The Mountaineers are struggling to score runs and that is putting pressure on the pitching staff. SU only scored two runs in the three games vs. LeTourneau and only one in a 9-1 loss to Trinity.
