We are well into SCAC competition in just about all of our fall sports. With Fall
Break coming up, our soccer and cross country teams will be on the road this weekend
at contests and events.
Here’s a quick update of recent activity with our sports teams:
VOLLEYBALL: went 2-2 last weekend in its first SCAC Cross Divisional Tournament. SU lost to #10-ranked Colorado College and Austin College, but beat both Dallas and Centenary, 3-0. Junior Callie Du Perier averaged 10.5 digs per match and senior Brittany Boyett averaged 9.5. Senior Jamie Burns averaged 18 digs while senior Jaemi Groves averaged nearly 31 assists.
MEN’S SOCCER: went 0-1-1 in first home SCAC weekend. Lost to Colorado College, 2-0 and tied Dallas, 1-1 on Sunday. Schreiner and CC were locked in a scoreless tie through ¾ of the match until two goals midway through the final period altered the outcome. On Sunday, Dallas scored in the first 10 minutes but sophomore Ryan Hernandez scored his first goal of the year off an assist by junior Justin Edwards to tie the match. Neither team would score over the next 90 minutes of play.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY: junior Adriana Mercado led five SU runners to a 5th place team finish at the HSU Invitational. The race was run just after a downpour rendered the course a quagmire. Mercado’s time of 23:19 placed her 16th while sophomore Courtney Van Ness finished second for SU at 24:11.
MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY: sophomore Kevin Perez was the Mountaineers’ top finisher at the HSU Invitational. His time of 25:05 gave him a 12th-place finish in the race as Schreiner finished 6th in the team standings. Junior Alex Guzman was next at 26:27 followed by sophomore Caleb McDaniel in 27:01.
MEN’S TENNIS: Schreiner’s #1 doubles team of juniors Stephen Rogers and Austin Carrola made the biggest noise at the ITA Regionals this past weekend. Dodging the raindrops and storms, Rogers and Carrola knocked off the #6-seeded doubles team in the first round and then beat one of Trinity’s doubles pairings in the second. The duo advanced to the quarterfinals before losing to the #3-seeded pair from Trinity (different pair than the 2nd round).
WOMEN’S SOCCER: went 0-1 this weekend, losing to Dallas, 2-0. It was a pair of goals by UDallas’ Rebecca Brunter that spoiled the afternoon for the gritty SU squad. Sophomore forward Bria Howard had both of SU’s shots and senior Lizeth De La Torre had seven saves in the match.
WOMEN’S GOLF: finished 7th at the UMHB Lady Cru Fall Invitational. Sophomore Mariah Silvas was SU’s top finisher. Silvas shot 84-80 to finish 15th. Junior Melanie Dean shot 84-86 to finish 22nd.
