Mountaineer Update
from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
October 10, 2013

Our women’s and men’s soccer teams and volleyball team all enter the second half of their first SCAC season this weekend.  For the soccer teams, those first matches are here on campus on Friday and Sunday.  Schreiner played its best soccer of the season on the road at these two opponents last weekend and now return to Mountaineer Field to face the same opponents on our turf.  Our student-athletes would love to have you come out and support our Mountaineers at the matches.  Remember, attendance is free.  The Schreiner cross country teams enter their home stretch with a race in San Antonio on Saturday morning.  Both Schreiner golf teams are in the finishing with a very busy stretch of two tournaments in 10 days.  The first is in Florida this weekend and into next week.

Here’s a quick recap of last weekend’s activity:

MEN’S SOCCER:  ran its unbeaten streak to three matches with a tie at Austin College and a 3-1 win at Centenary.  Schreiner’s offense got hot with goals by sophomore Fernando Albiter (assist by sophomore Cody Hollingshead), junior Luis Santos (assist by sophomore Ryan Hernandez) and Ryan Hernandez (assist by Albiter).   The SU defense was strong only allowing three shots on goal in the match.  Freshman Blake Lawson had two saves.

WOMEN’S SOCCER:  played its best soccer of the season but lost two close matches, 1-0 at Austin College and 2-0 at Centenary.  In the second half of the CC match, Schreiner dominated the play and out-shot the Ladies 11-5.  Senior Lizeth De La Torre had 10 saves.  Junior Gabby Watson and sophomore Kelcie Nesbitt had three shots each in the match, while senior Aryel Kelley, sophomore Bria Howard and freshmen Heather Cagle and Yahaira Montes each had two shots.

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY:  Schreiner finished seventh at the Alamo City Duals last weekend.  Junior Adriana Mercado led a strong SU effort.  She was followed closely by sophomore newcomer Mariah Silvas and sophomore Courtney Van Ness.

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY:  SU placed sixth at the Alamo City Duals.  Sophomore Kevin Perez ran well again and led the Mountaineer contingent.  Sophomore Caleb McDaniel was second on the team and freshman newcomer Connor Ver Schuur was third.
