Our fall teams are in their final week or so of regular season contests. Both soccer
teams host a pair of matches this weekend at Mountaineer Field. See below for details.
Our cross country teams finish their season at the SCAC championships in Louisiana
while our volleyball team plays its final four SCAC matches (prior to the post-season
tournament) in Sherman. Basketball practices are under way with scrimmages to start
Here’s a quick recap of last week’s action:
WOMEN’S GOLF – finished third at the Alamo City Classic. The 31st-ranked Mountaineers were behind only the #6 and #7 teams in the nation, but beat the #11 team (and tournament host) as well as the only NAIA scholarship team in the field of eight schools. Schreiner’s two-round total of 641 set a school record. Freshman Gabby Davis posted the lowest two round total for a freshmen in SU history and finished seventh overall after rounds of 79-78. Junior Maddie Scheidler (79-83) and sophomores Mariah Silvas (81-81) and Courtlynd Miller (84-78) tied for 14th place overall. For Miller, the 78 was her collegiate best performance.
VOLLEYBALL - SU went 2-0 in non-conference action, including a thrilling 3-2 win over NAIA scholarship Our Lady of the Lake on Senior Day. The Mountaineers swept Howard Payne, 3-0, behind 10 kills each by senior Brittany Boyett and sophomore Alyssa Chapman. Senior Jaemi Groves had a strong all-around performance with 25 assists and 11 digs to go with eight kills. Against OLLU, senior Veronica Castillo returned from an injury to put down 12 kills to tie junior Callie Du Perier for team-high honors. Seniors Jamie Burns and Shalon Bridges combined for 37 digs.
MEN’S SOCCER – went 1-1 on a trip to both Colorado Springs and Dallas last weekend. Lost to Colorado College, 4-1, but rebounded to defeat UDallas, 2-0. The Mountaineers got goals from sophomores Ryan Hernandez and Fernando Albiter in the win at Dallas. Hernandez, after a slow start to the season, has now scored five goals to match his freshman year scoring output. For Albiter, it was his second goal of the year. SU has now won four of its last five matches. Junior Zach Howard scored the lone goal at CC. Freshman Blake Lawson and the Schreiner defense have posted four shutouts in the past six matches. Lawson made 14 saves against CC.
WOMEN’S SOCCER – lost a heartbreaker, 1-0 in double overtime, against Dallas. The team continues to improve and that was evident again on Sunday. Last month, Dallas came to Kerrville and dominated the match in a 2-0 win over SU. This time, the match was very even and only a fluke goal was the difference in the second overtime period. Sophomore Bria Howard had three shots and freshman Monique Hutcheson had two in the match. Senior Lizeth De La Torre had seven saves.
MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY – finished 4th at the Concordia Invitational. Sophomore Kevin Perez had his top collegiate finish, fourth place individually, to again lead the Mountaineers. He ran the 5k race in 17:10 and has improved steadily throughout the year. Freshman Connor Ver Schuur, who also plays for Schreiner Baseball, continues to make great strides and finished the race in 18:35.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY – sophomore Courtney Van Ness was again SU’s top finisher among the four racers that competed. She ran the 5k course in 22:40 and finished 43rd. Freshman Alexis Nyquist was second in a time of 23:41 which was good for 49th.
MEN’S GOLF – finished 5th at the Alamo City Classic. The 22nd-ranked Mountaineers didn’t finish the fall season as well as hoped, shooting rounds of 305-301. The bright spot was sophomore Phil Stewart. Stewart, playing his first tournament since breaking his arm this summer and having surgery to insert metal rods, shot 71-74 to finish in fifth place overall.
