Mountaineer Update
from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
October 30, 2013
First, my apology for confusion regarding our men’s and women’s cross country teams
competing in the SCAC Championships. That meet will actually take place this Saturday
morning in Shreveport. Good luck to both of our teams. Our fall regular season,
with the exception of cross country, is in its final week. Men’s and Women’s Soccer
will each have Senior Day and the men’s team has already clinched a spot in next week’s
SCAC postseason tournament. The women have a chance to earn a spot with a win on
Friday. Seniors playing their final home games on Friday are Kelan Robinson and Drew
Rouse (Men’s Soccer) and Aryel Kelley, Lizeth De La Torre and Jeanette Montes (Women’s
Soccer). Come on out and take advantage of your last opportunity to watch Schreiner
Soccer for the last time at home this season. Volleyball is out of town at the SCAC/ASC
Challenge and has also clinched a spot in the SCAC Championship Tournament.
Here’s a recap of last weekend’s activities:
VOLLEYBALL – won two matches and lost two matches at the final SCAC Cross-Divisional Tournament
in Sherman, TX. With the two wins – one of those being a crucial 3-1 win over Dallas
– Schreiner clinched the sixth spot in the SCAC Championship Tournament on a tiebreaker.
Schreiner was 2-0 vs. Dallas this year. Junior Callie Du Perier averaged 14.5 kills
and 12 digs per match over the weekend, while senior Jaemi Groves averaged 34 assists
and 11 digs and senior Jamie Burns averaged 20 digs per match. Senior Veronica Castillo
delivered 7.5 kills and 3.5 blocks while senior Brittany Boyett averaged seven kills
and 11 digs.
WOMEN’S SOCCER - lost 2-0 to Southwestern and 5-0 to #3 Trinity. The Schreiner women continue
to show improvement even in the late stages of the season. Both weekend matches were
examples of the progress under first year head coach Nick Morrison. Earlier this
year, Southwestern outshot SU 23-4 and the difference was only 11-6 last Friday.
Against one of the very best teams in the nation (Trinity), SU was outshot 51-1 earlier
this year in a 10-0 loss, but the margin was cut in half (27-1) both in the stats
and on the scoreboard. Should SU win over TLU on Friday, Schreiner would own the
tiebreaker which is score differential against common opponents.
MEN’S SOCCER – lost to Southwestern (2-0) and to #10 Trinity (6-0). The Southwestern match was
a defensive contest throughout. Schreiner held the Pirates to just three shots on
goal, but two of the shots found the back on the net. One of the three was on a penalty
kick. Southwestern’s defense was even more stifling, limiting the Mountaineers to
just one shot on goal. Against Trinity, the Tigers took control of the match in the
first 22 minutes, scoring four times.
