It was a really good week for Schreiner teams. Please see the reports below to get
more on what transpired.
In addition to our fall teams coming down the home stretch of their respective seasons, our basketball teams began practice earlier this week. They'll begin competitions next month. Saturday is Senior Day for six of our volleyball players who will play their final home match in Edington Gym at Noon. Seniors Veronica Castillo, Jamie Burns, Brittany Boyett, Jaemi Groves, Shalon Bridges and Lauren Prukop will all be recognized before the match. Please come out and thank these six student-athletes for their contributions during their careers.
Here's a quick rundown of what took place in the past week:
MEN'S GOLF - finished in eighth place in the 18 team Golfweek Fall Invitational. The only teams to finish ahead of SU in the tournament were all ranked in the top 11 in the nation. SU beat seven nationally-ranked teams and tied another. Freshman Matt McClung finished eighth individually with scores of 71-74-70. Junior Jimmy Keener was ahead of McClung entering the last day after rounds of 72-71 but shot 79 in the final round and dropped 26 spots to 34th. The Mountaineers shot 295 each day and are currently ranked #19 in the nation.
WOMEN'S GOLF - finished in 10th place out of 17 teams at the Golfweek Invitational. SU beat six nationally-ranked teams and moved up to 32nd in the national rankings. The Mountaineers were the lowest ranked team entering the event but proved they belong in this elite group of schools. Sophomore Mariah Silvas was again the top tournament finisher for the Mountaineers after rounds of 83-77-81. Sophomore Amber Hernandez was one shot back after rounds of 80-80-82.
MEN'S SOCCER - went 2-0 this weekend, beating Austin College, 1-0, and Centenary, 2-0. Sophomore Ryan Hernandez is coming on in the second half of the season and scored two of the three goals, including both game winners. Sophomore Cody Hollingshead scored the second goal vs. CC. Freshman goalkeeper Blake Lawson now has shutouts in three of the last four matches. Junior Justin Edwards assisted on Hernandez' first goal on Sunday and has the lead in that category.
WOMEN'S SOCCER - went 1-1 this weekend. Lost to Austin College, 1-3, and beat Centenary in overtime, 2-1. Interestingly, the team that scored first in each match, lost. SU freshman Yahaira Montes scored the first goal against AC, but the Roos scored the next three goals to take the win. On Sunday, after Centenary took a 1-0 lead early in the second half, junior Gabby Watson tied the match up with 11 minutes to play. Watson was then given a red card two minutes later and the Mountaineers had to play a man down. The contest went into overtime with CC having the advantage, but freshman Natalie Requenez' goal gave SU and new head coach Nick Morrison their first win.
MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY - sophomore Kevin Perez cut one minute off his time from the previous week and finished 19th at the Angelo State Blue/Gold Classic. Freshman Connor Ver Schuur was second for SU as the team finished 5th.
WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY - sophomore Courtney Van Ness was SU's top finisher at the ASU Blue/Gold Classic and junior Adriana Mercado was second in the event.
