Mountaineer Update
from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
April 2, 2014

First, congratulations to freshman Stormie Lutz of Schreiner Softball for being named SCAC Offensive Player of the Week last week.  Her outstanding weekend is outlined below.  It will be another busy weekend on campus as not only Recall will be happening, but so will the final home games for Schreiner Baseball and Schreiner Softball (and a home men’s tennis match as well).   A total of 11 Mountaineers will be playing their final games on Saturday (SB) and Sunday (BB).  For SU Softball, it will be seniors Victoria Alcozer, Brianna Brunner and Victoria Day and for SU Baseball, it will be seniors Chase Valdez, Kelly Rundzieher, Ethan Catalani, Brett Keckler, Colton Mendenhall, Daniel Brewer, Ryan Pisseri and Chris Migl.

Here’s a quick look back at last weekend’s action:

SOFTBALL:  went 2-2 last weekend, winning the first game of each doubleheader and then losing in the second against the University of Dallas.  Lutz was the big story, going 8-for-12 on the weekend and raising her batting average 70 points over the two days.  She had two doubles, two triples and a home run and had a 1.416 slugging percentage.    Alcozer also had a big weekend with seven hits in 14 plate appearances (.500) and freshman Destiny Rodriguez was strong in the first game of each doubleheader.

WOMEN’S TENNIS:  lost at #11 Trinity and defeated Hardin-Simmons, 6-3.  SU was competitive in the match at Trinity and then had several strong performances in the win over the Cowgirls on Saturday.   Freshmen Alex Wheeler and Camila Anguiano each had wins in both singles and doubles action and sophomore Brooke Ohlman and freshman Brittney Garza also went undefeated.  Sophomore Karyn Swink won a tough three-set match at #3 singles.

BASEBALL:  won 1 of three games vs. Centenary last weekend.  Errors continue to be a deterrent to SU’s success.  The Mountaineers committed five in a 7-3 loss on Friday.  In Saturday’s first game, the defense played a clean game and SU rallied from an early 4-0 deficit and won, 8-4.  Catalani was outstanding again on the hill, going the final four innings and allowing just one hit to earn his third win on the season.  In the finale, five more errors cost SU in a 10-3 loss.
MEN’S TENNIS:  lost to Hardin-Simmons, 9-0.   SU was in some pretty good matches, but the Cowboys won the decisive points and games as the matches wore on.
