Mountaineer Update
from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
April 9, 2014
Congratulations to sophomore Courtlynd Miller of the SU women’s golf team for earning
the SCAC Character & Community Student-Athlete of the Week award for last week. Also,
a thank you goes to Jimmy and Lori Smith. Jimmy resigned his position as our head
men’s basketball coach and will be leaving us soon but we are greatly appreciative
of his professionalism, passion and efforts that certainly made Schreiner Men’s Basketball
better than when he arrived two years ago. Best wishes, Jimmy!
Last week, both SU’s baseball and softball teams celebrated Senior Day as a total
of 11 players from the two teams (combined) were recognized for their contributions
to their respective programs. For SU Softball, it was seniors Victoria Alcozer, Brianna
Brunner and Victoria Day and for SU Baseball, it was seniors Ethan Catalani, Colton
Mendenhall, Daniel Brewer, Ryan Pisseri, Kelly Rundzieher, Chase Valdez, Chris Migl
and Brett Keckler. Congratulations and thank you to all 11 players for their time
and efforts representing the maroon and white.
Here’s a quick rundown of last week’s activities:
MEN’S GOLF: finished in second place at the West Region Invitational. Freshman Matt McClung
won his first collegiate event and became the third different men’s golf team win
an individual title this year. He shot 72-73-76. Junior Cheyne Kendall was third
which is the third straight event that he placed third or better. Included in that
run is a win last month at the Schreiner Spring Shootout. The Mountaineers, currently
ranked #17 in the nation, were edged by #12 UT-Tyler for the team title. #16 Southwestern,
who hosted the event, was 23 shots behind SU in third place. #18-ranked Trinity was
41 shots in back of Schreiner.
WOMEN’S GOLF: finished in fourth place at the West Region Invitational. SU was paced by sophomore
Amber Hernandez and freshman Kaycee Bankert who tied for 11th place overall. Schreiner
is currently ranked #23 in the nation. The event was won by #7 Mary Hardin-Baylor,
with #5 UT-Tyler in second place. Southwestern, currently ranked #17 was in third
place followed by SU. Trinity, which is ranked #11 in the nation, was 24 shots behind
the Mountaineers and placed in fifth out of the eight teams in the field.
MEN’S TENNIS: lost to NCAA Division I Abilene Christian, 7-0. No details are available.
BASEBALL: lost a three-game series to #6 Trinity this weekend and then lost a 6-1 contest
at #11 Concordia-TX last night. SU had a tough weekend in all phases of the game
against the Tigers. TU scored 32 runs, only allowed four and the Mountaineers committed
nine errors in the three games. SU led 4-0 in Saturday’s finale but the Tigers rallied
against Joe Osinski for seven runs to take command. SU bats were held to just two
hits over the final seven innings. Valdez had a pair of hits in the game.
SOFTBALL: lost a four game series with SCAC leader Texas Lutheran this past weekend. The Bulldogs
showed why they are 17-1 in conference play by outscoring SU, 62-11. Alcozer paced
the Schreiner attack with four hits.
