Mountaineer Update
from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
April 23, 2014

First, congratulations to several Mountaineer student-athletes:  junior Ian Davis of men’s golf who was named the SCAC Character & Community male student-athlete of the week.  Also, senior softball player Victoria Alcozer who earned SCAC Offensive Player of the Week (see below) and also sophomore baseball pitcher Matt Barnett who earned SCAC Pitcher of the Week (see below).

Also, congratulations to the Schreiner men’s golf team for earning the first SCAC team championship yesterday in record-breaking fashion.  Junior Zach Oliver won the individual title by an astounding 10 strokes while junior Cheyne Kendall was second.  The SU men now await an at-large bid to their second straight NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament.

Good luck to our Women’s Tennis, Softball and Men’s Tennis teams as they begin SCAC Tournament play on Friday.  More on that below as well.

Here’s a recap of last week’s action:

MEN GOLF:  won the SCAC title by a whopping 21 strokes over #19 Trinity and 26 strokes over #17 Southwestern.  Oliver was the story of the tournament, shooting record-breaking rounds of 70-70-68 for an 8 under par total.  He earned SCAC First Team and Player of the Year honors.  Kendall finished second after shooting 72-75-71 and also was First Team All-SCAC.  Sophomore Phil Stewart had rounds of 76-72-72 to earn Second Team All-SCAC.  Matt McClung earned honorable mention All-SCAC and was also named Freshman of the Year.  The Mountaineers shot an opening round 291 to trail the Pirates by three.  Another 291 on Monday put SU up by 9 strokes over Trinity and the team pulled away on Tuesday for the convincing win.  As a team, SU was +2 for the tournament.

SOFTBALL:  swept a four-game series at Centenary to move into fourth place in the SCAC standing and earn the program’s first postseason tournament appearance since 2009.  SU won by scores of 6-3, 7-4, 2-1 and 9-6.  Alcozer had a huge weekend, going 7-for-16 at the plate, with two doubles, a grand slam and nine RBI.  She had five RBI in Friday’s doubleheader and then hit the decisive grand slam in the finale.  Freshman Destiny Rodriguez held CC to two runs (one earned) and had a home run in Saturday’s first game.  The Mountaineers begin SCAC Tournament play on Friday vs. #5 seed Austin College.

WOMEN’S TENNIS:  won a pair of SCAC contests, beating Colorado College, 8-1, and beating Texas Lutheran, 6-3.  With the wins, SU earns the #3 seed at this weekend’s SCAC Tournament, which will be hosted by nationally-ranked Trinity.  Schreiner also faces Austin College in the first round matchup.   In the TLU win, freshmen Alex Wheeler and Camila Anguiano won both their singles and doubles matches and sophomore Brooke Ohlman won her match.

WOMEN’S GOLF:  finished in third place at the SCAC Championships.  #11 Trinity won the tournament and #17 Southwestern finished second with the #23 Mountaineers next.  Freshman Gabby Davis was fourth overall after rounds of 80-82 to earn First Team All-SCAC.  She also smashed the freshmen scoring record.  Junior Maddie Scheidler (83-80) and freshman Kaycee Bankert (88-80) earned Second Team All-SCAC honors.

BASEBALL:  went 1-2 to conclude their season at Texas Lutheran last Thursday and Friday. Barnett had his second straight dominating performance.  In Thursday’s 2-0 win, he gave up five hits, walked one and struck out one in seven innings of work.  SU lost a doubleheader on Friday by 11-1 and 7-1 scores but the program’s 15 wins in 2014 was the most for a Schreiner baseball team since 2007.

MEN’S TENNIS:  went 0-2 against Colorado and TLU.  Schreiner enters the SCAC Tournament as the #4 seed and faces Austin College (yes, the same school for each of our three teams in the postseason) on Friday in San Antonio.
