Mountaineer Update
from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
February 26, 2014

We got through a very busy weekend of sports activities on campus and now prepare for our first opportunity to participate in the SCAC Basketball Championship Tournament (at Trinity) and see our 2014 Schreiner Softball team in person tomorrow (date change due to today’s weather).

Lori Smith sent out information on a free shuttle to see our Schreiner Basketball teams play in San Antonio on Friday.  Admission is also free.  Congratulations to both junior Zach Oliver and freshman Kaycee Bankert as each earned SCAC Golfer of the Week last week.    Men’s & Women’s Golf hosts our only “home” event next Monday and Tuesday at Comanche Trace.

Here’s a quick rundown on last week’s busy schedule of events:

MEN’S BASKETBALL:  went 1-0, beating TLU on Senior Day, 80-71.  Schreiner seniors AJ Myres, Tyler Guderyahn and Grant Clark all made contributions as the Mountaineers took control of the game in the first half and cruised to the win.  The 14th win of the season broke SU’s NCAA era record for overall wins.  Schreiner finishes in a tie for second place but gets the #3 seed due to a tiebreaker.  Schreiner faces Austin College at 7:00 pm in Webster Gym on Trinity’s campus in the quarterfinals of the SCAC Tournament.  Myres is second in the SCAC in scoring at 18.8 ppg and junior Steve Guerrero is third in rebounding at 6.0.  Schreiner is 1-1 vs. Austin College this season.  If SU wins, we will face the winner of the Centenary/Southwestern game.  That game will be in Webster Gym at 3 pm on Saturday.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL:  lost season finale to #1 Texas Lutheran, 63-58.  Schreiner played very well in the game but came up a bit short in the final minutes of a record-breaking season.  Seniors Bailey Harris, Chelsea Watters and Lindsey Peterson all made big contributions in their final home game.  The Mountaineers finish in a three-way tie for third place in the league but get the #5 seed based on tiebreakers.  Schreiner also faces Austin College in the quarterfinals.  The game will be played in Sams Gym on the Trinity campus at 4:00 pm on Friday.    If SU wins, we face the winner of the Texas Lutheran/Centenary game on Saturday at 5 pm in Sams Gym.  Peterson continues to lead the league in scoring at 17.1 ppg and sophomore Kelsie Jackson is fifth at 15.1.  Peterson is also seventh in rebounding at 6.9.

WOMEN’S TENNIS:  won 9-0 in only match of the week over Howard Payne.   SU’s freshmen led the way as Camila Anguiano dominated her match, 6-0, 6-0.  She also teamed with sophomore Leanna Haynes for an 8-2 win at #1 doubles.  That duo has been outstanding all year.  Meanwhile sophomore Karyn Swink and freshman Kelsie Buczkowski teamed at #2 doubles for an 8-0 win.  Freshman Alex Wheeler won her singles match, 6-3, 6-0 and paired with sophomore Brooke Ohlman for a 8-4 win at #3 doubles.  The Mountaineers are 5-1 on the season.

MEN’S TENNIS:  won 8-1 over Howard Payne in only match.  Juniors Austin Carrola and Stephen Rogers started the day off with an 8-3 win at #1 doubles.  Both won their singles matches, 6-1, 6-1.  SU’s #2 doubles team of sophomores Teg Lozano and Brice Conoly and #3 team of sophomores Christian Casillas and Josh Ramirez also dispatched their opponents efficiently.   SU is currently 3-4 overall.

SOFTBALL:  went 3-3 on their trip to Florida for the Dot Richardson Spring Games.   With 12 new faces on the roster, it was obvious from the very first game of the trip that this is a very different team in head coach Jessica Peterka’s second year.  Schreiner won 3-1 over NAIA (scholarship) Northwood (FL) in that opening game.  The Mountaineers also notched two wins over Lyndon State and lost two one-run games against tough D-III opponents.  Although the season is only days old, SU has already matched last year’s overall win total and has scored just one run less (36) than the entire year last year.  Tonight’s home opener has been moved to tomorrow at 1:00 pm vs. Our Lady of the Lake.

BASEBALL:  went 2-4 against Lewis & Clark and Pacific.  Schreiner opened the weekend with a 13-2 win over L&C and finished it with an 11-2 win over Pacific.  In the first game, freshman Hayden Ray went the distance in limiting Lewis & Clark to two runs over seven innings.  Schreiner pounded out 19 hits, including four by junior Ryan Pisseri and three for senior Chase Valdez.  Sophomore Ryan Martin had three RBI.  In the finale, sophomores Mikey Garcia and Matt Barnett combined to hold Pacific to just one earned run.  Valdez had four more hits and Pisseri had two and scored three times.
