Mountaineer Update
from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
January 13, 2014

Welcome back Schreiner students, faculty and staff and Happy New Year!  While the campus was pretty quiet over break, our SU basketball teams were hard at work.  Both teams played at least seven games over the past four weeks and have their respective home SCAC openers this Friday and Saturday.  As you’ll read, our Mountaineers have played very good basketball and both teams are on pace to have the best years in the NCAA era.  This Friday, Colorado College makes its first visit to Edington Center and we need to rally our support to cheer our teams to victory.  Before getting into a recap of the last month, congratulations goes to sophomore Kaitlyn Goertz for being recognized as the SCAC’s Character & Community honoree last week and to senior AJ Myres who was named SCAC Player of the Week today.

Here’s a quick recap of the action:

MEN’S BASKETBALL:  went 5-2 during that time.  Have won five straight games, including the first three in SCAC play.  Notably, SU won at TLU in early January, at Southwestern last Friday and beat the SCAC defending champions (and preseason favorites) Trinity, on their home court last Saturday.  As mentioned, AJ Myres is leading the charge.  He is currently #2 in the SCAC in scoring at 21.1 ppg and second in field goal % and #3 in steals.  On Saturday, SU was trailing by one point in the final 30 seconds when Myres made a clean steal, raced down court for a layup to give SU the lead and then sealed with win with two free throws in the final seconds.  Junior Steve Guerrero is also having a huge year.  He is 7th in the league in scoring (15.6 ppg) and is also 5th in rebounding (6.3/game) and assists (3.4/game).   SU is getting solid supporting play from players like junior Hollis Robinson and freshmen Jared Thompson and Maverick Harris.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL:  went 3-5 over break.  SU is currently 1-2 in SCAC play.  The Mountaineers lost at TLU, won at Southwestern last Friday and lost at preseason favorite Trinity on Saturday.  Junior Lindsey Peterson continues to lead the league in scoring (17.6 ppg) and is 6th in rebounding (7.4/game).  Sophomore Kelsie Jackson is 9th in the SCAC at 13.1 ppg and also in the top 20 in both rebounds and assists.  Senior Bailey Harris is also averaging in double figures at 10.1 and is in the top 10 in assists.   Freshman Sabriyahh Fennell has been producing points and bringing down more than five rebounds per contest to help carry the load.
