Mountaineer Update
from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
January 21, 2014

What a weekend for Schreiner Basketball.  For the first time in my nine years, and quite possibly the first time in our NCAA era, both SU basketball teams swept their home weekend games.  Not only were the teams great, but the fan support was as well.  Thanks to all of you who came out and supported our successful Mountaineer teams this weekend.  It was great atmosphere and helped propel our teams to victory both on Friday and Saturday.

Also, congratulations to sophomore Kelsie Jackson for being named SCAC Player of the Week.  This is the second straight week that one of our players earned the honor (senior AJ Myres earned it last week).  As always, go the the SU Athletics website ( for more information.

Here’s a quick recap of a great weekend in SU sports:

MEN’S BASKETBALL:  went 2-0 last weekend.  Knocked off #25 Colorado College in a battle for first place in the SCAC, 71-58, and then beat UDallas, 72-62.  In both games, SU’s emerging offensive depth was on display.  In the win over CC, it was the second half defense that was the difference as the Mountaineers turned a three point halftime deficit into a comfortable win by holding the Tigers below 30% shooting in the second period.   Junior Steve Guerrero led the way with 16 points, seven rebounds and five assists and Myres and freshman Maverick Harris added 12.  Against Dallas, freshman Wes Miller scored 13 points while Guerrero had 12 and Harris scored 10.  Myres added nine assists.  SU is the only undefeated team in the SCAC (5-0) and takes its seven game win streak to Sherman on Friday to face Austin College.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL:  went 2-0 last weekend.  Beat Colorado College on Friday, 75-63, and then beat Dallas less than a day later, 73-65.  As mentioned, Jackson had a big weekend averaging 19.5 points and grabbing six rebounds on average in the two contests.   In Friday’s win, junior Lindsey Peterson (the SCAC’s leading scorer) tied Jackson with a game-high 17 points and had eight rebounds.  On Saturday, freshman Sabriyahh Fennell had 16 points and eight rebounds, to go with three assists to help SU to victory.  Four Mountaineers scored in double figures in that game.  Peterson had 14 points and senior Bailey Harris scored 12.  SU is now 3-2 in SCAC play and in third place in the league going into Friday’s road matchup at Austin College.  AC is in second place after beating top-seeded Trinity on the road on Saturday night.
