Mountaineer Update
from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
January 29, 2014

We are coming up on a big weekend for Schreiner Basketball.  Friday begins the second half of the SCAC schedule and both our teams have a lot going on.  For the guys, it’s a chance at redemption and for the women, it’s a chance to beat a team just ahead of it in the standings.  For both teams, it is about holding serve on your home court and facing the same teams we just played last weekend.

We had great atmosphere at Edington two weeks ago when our SU teams were last in town and the Mountaineers responded with a 4-0 record.  Come on out to Edington this weekend and let’s try to do it again!

Last weekend’s action:

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL:  went 1-1 on the road.  Lost at Austin 57-48 and beat Centenary, 75-54.  With the win, the women have now tied the single-season record for wins (9) in the NCAA era.  In the loss at AC, first half shooting was an issue.  Schreiner hit just 17% of its shots but played better in the second half.   Junior Lindsey Peterson scored 13 points and had nine rebounds.  Olivia Lott added 10 points and six boards.  In the win over CC, Schreiner turned a six point halftime lead into a comfortable win with strong second half play.  Peterson went for 26 and nine and sophomore Kelsie Jackson chipped in 19 points and eight rebounds.

MEN’S BASKETBALL:  went 0-2 at Austin (79-66) and Centenary (70-67).    Against a previously winless AC squad, SU was beaten soundly.  The Mountaineers were down 12 at the break and endured an early 17-4 run that put the game out of reach.   Senior AJ Myres scored 27 points in the loss.  Against the Gents of CC, it was a much more competitive game and SU had its chances down the stretch but another slow start to the second half put the Mountaineers in catch-up mode the rest of the game.   Myres again led the way with 18 points and freshman Wes Miller added 15 points and seven rebounds (six offensive).
