Mountaineer Update
from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
March 20, 2014

Welcome back from Spring Break.  We now enter the stretch run for the 2013-14 academic year which means that conference contests are now the primary focus for our sports teams.  Congratulations to senior AJ Myres of Schreiner Men’s Basketball.  He added two more prestigious awards to his haul from the recently -ompleted season.  This week, AJ was named to both the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and All-South teams.

We have a busy weekend of home contests coming up so this is a great chance to come out and support your Schreiner teams.  Here’s a quick look back at last week’s action.

WOMEN’S GOLF -  won the UTD Lady Comet Invitational by 70 shots.  Freshman Gabby Davis won her second consecutive individual title, shooting 81-80 for a one-stroke victory.  She has already tied the program record for most career individual titles in just her first three tournaments.   Sophomore Amber Hernandez finished in third place overall after rounds of 86-84.  Schreiner is currently ranked #25 in the nation.

SOFTBALL – went 2-2 last weekend at Austin College and lost a doubleheader to OLLU. It was a Jeckyll/Hyde weekend for the Mountaineers as SU traded comfortable wins and sizeable losses.  Not surprising for a team made up mostly of first-year players.   In a 6-2 win on Friday, freshman Destiny Rodriguez threw a complete game seven hitter and junior Brianna Rodriguez drove in a pair of runs.  In Saturday’s 12-2 win, Rodriguez again went the distance allowing just three hits.  Sophomore Holly Molenaar had three hits in four at-bats and both Rodriguez and freshman Sammy Hernandez had two hits and drove in three runs.

BASEBALL – went 0-1 last week, falling to NAIA (scholarship) Wayland Baptist, 3-0.  Five Schreiner pitchers combined to limit WBU to nine hits and three runs.  Sophomore Matt Barnett went the first two innings, allowing one run.  Senior Ethan Catalani pitched the next two and also gave up one run.  Senior Joe Osinski was nearly perfect  in his two innings of work.  Senior Daniel Brewer pitched the seventh and got out of the inning unscathed and senior Colton Mendenhall pitched the final inning, allowing one run.

MEN’S TENNIS -  went 1-3 on their trip to AZ.  Playing mostly scholarship programs, SU earned a 9-0 win over Glendale CC and lost to Arizona Christian, Mesa CC and Colorado Mesa.

WOMEN’S TENNIS -  went 0-4 on their trip to AZ.  Playing against strong scholarship programs, SU came up short in each of the four matches.   SU had its best match against Dixie State, losing 6-3.
