First, there are postseason awards to recognize from our fall sports teams. First, congratulations to Women’s Soccer head coach Nick Morrison (Tri- Coach of the Year) as well as a pair of his freshmen, Ruth Blackburn (Tri-Newcomer of the Year) and Alex Gill, who were both named second team All-SCAC this fall. Also, junior Cody Hollingshead was named honorable mention All-SCAC from our men’s soccer team this fall. Congratulations to all four Mountaineers!
Basketball season is now underway and both teams had lengthy trips to the Pacific Northwest this past week. Both teams return home and while the women’s team goes back on the road this weekend, the men’s team plays its home opener on Saturday at 4:00 pm in Edington Center against a tough Concordia-TX squad. This will be your first chance to see your 2014-15 men’s team in action and Student Activities has scheduled a pregame tailgate party to get everyone ready for the contest. Come out and cheer on our 2-0 Mountaineers. The women’s team has their home opener next Monday in the first game of a women’s/men’s doubleheader with Hardin-Simmons at 5:30 pm.
Here’s a quick look back at last week’s action:
MEN’S BASKETBALL: went 2-0 in Oregon. Defeated Pacific, 65-58, and beat Willamette (69-57). New head coach Connor Kuykendall saw his squad take down two quality opponents to open the season. Sophomore Jared Thompson leads a balanced offensive attack through the two games (11.0 ppg), followed closely by do-everything senior guard Steve Guerrero and junior Christian Pena (10.5 ppg each). Pena has been particularly tough on the glass, leading the team in rebounds with 8.5 per contest while Guerrero is pulling down 6.5 boards and dishing out 6.0 assists as well.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: went 0-3 in Oregon, losing three close games. Schreiner is playing very strong defense but is looking for more consistency on the offensive end of the court. Junior Kelsie Jackson again leads the team at 13.0 points per night to go with eight rebounds. Sophomores Sabriyahh Fennell and Cody Simmons average more than 15 ppg between them and both are near 50% from the field. Fennell is also chipping in with 5.3 rebounds per contest.
The schedule for the week ahead:
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL at Howard Payne (Brownwood, TX) at 1:00 pm
MEN’S BASKETBALL vs. Concordia-TX (Edington Center) at 4:00 pm – home opener, pregame tailgate sponsored by Student Activities
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL vs. Hardin-Simmons (Edington Center) at 5:30 pm - home opener
