Mountaineer Update
from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
November 5, 2014

The fall season ended for three of our five fall teams ended last weekend.  Our soccer teams made history as this is the first year that both of our teams qualified for the postseason tournament.  It’s also the first time that women’s soccer has ever advanced to the postseason.  Both teams will play Friday in the quarterfinals of the SCAC Championships.  More on those matches below in the review of last week as well as in the upcoming schedule.  Congratulations to senior Elliot Frey of the men’s cross country team as he was selected as Schreiner’s fall recipient (men’s teams) of the SCAC Character & Community Award.  His profile should be appearing on the SCAC website ( in the next day or two and will also be on the Schreiner Athletics website (

Here’s a quick look back at last weekend’s action:

VOLLEYBALL:  went 2-1 in the Schreiner Classic, defeating University of the Southwest, 3-1 and Centenary (3-2) before losing to McMurry (3-0).   SU finished the season winning three of its final five matches.   Against USW, the Mountaineers were led by junior Alyssa Chapman (18 kills, .333 attack percentage, 11 digs), freshman Lauren McQueen (16 kills, seven digs), senior Kelli Bolen (49 assists, nine digs) and senior Kaylei Sockol (10 digs).   Senior Kathryn Wallace also contributed eight digs.

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY:  juniors Allyson Graybill and Miranda Reagan led Schreiner to a 7th place finish at the SCAC Championships in Boerne.  Graybill was the first Mountaineer across the finish line in 28:56 followed by Reagan in 29:40.  Senior Adriana Mercado ran her final collegiate race for Schreiner and was third to finish for the team.

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY:  junior Kevin Perez again was the top qualifier for the Mountaineers, running the race in 18:07.  That wasn’t a surprise as Perez has been SU’s top runner ever since he came to SU.  Freshman Ricky Canales and sophomore Connor Ver Schuur continued their rapid improvement with final times of 18:44 and 18:47 to give Schreiner three solid scores as the Mountaineers also finished seventh at the SCAC Championships.

MEN’S SOCCER:  lost 1-0 at Texas Lutheran to end the regular season.  It was the final regular season match for seniors Zach Jungman, Zach Howard, Justin Edwards, Jon Sicola, Garner Burford (injured), Luis Santos and Daniel Perez.  Schreiner now readies itself for a quarterfinal match on Friday at 1:30 vs. Southwestern in Seguin.  The Mountaineers and Pirates split their regular-season contests, each winning at home, 1-0.

WOMEN’S SOCCER:  lost 1-0 at TLU to end their regular season.  The very young SU squad didn’t have a senior and also now is preparing for a first-ever quarterfinal matchup.  Schreiner plays the University of Dallas on Friday in San Antonio at 7:30 pm.  SU lost a pair of one-goal decisions to UD during the regular season.
