Mountaineer Update
from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
October 16, 2014

First, congratulations to Schreiner senior cross country runner Victoria Ponse for being recognized with the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference’s “Character & Community Award”. To see her video, please click here.

Also, congratulations to senior Jimmy Keener for earning the SCAC men’s golfer of the week for the third time this fall season.  Keener finished fifth overall and earned All-Tournament at the prestigious Golfweek Fall Invitational that concluded on Tuesday.

Lastly, winter is creeping closer as the recent morning temperatures would attest to.  Another sign is that our basketball teams conducted their first practices for the 2014-15 season last night.  It will be another busy weekend with our soccer teams hosting nationally-ranked Trinity on Friday and then welcoming Southwestern to campus on Sunday for matches.

Here’s a quick recap of last week’s action:

MEN’S SOCCER:  lost to Dallas, 1-0, and beat Austin College, 4-3 in overtime.  Against AC, the match was scoreless until the 41st minute.  Once the ‘Roos broke through for the first goal, a dam of scoring broke.  Freshman Gregg Gutierrez tied the match only to see AC scored again just before halftime.  Junior Ryan Hernandez scored early in the second half but again Austin moved ahead in the 56th minute.  Senior Justin Edwards again tied the score with his goal in the 75th minute.  That sent the match into overtime where Hernandez scored the game-winner unassisted.

WOMEN’S GOLF:  finished in 13th place at the Golfweek Fall Invitational. With 17 of the top teams in the nation participating, SU was in 8th place after two rounds.  Although the Mountaineers dropped back a few spots on the last day, the team again played well.  Senior Melanie Dean led the way with rounds of 81-80-82 to finish in 31st place.  Senior Maddie Scheidler posted 84-80-81 to finish two shots back and sophomore Kaycee Bankert went 79-79-88 to place on spot behind Scheidler.

MEN’S GOLF:  finished in 7th place at the Golfweek Fall Invitational.  As mentioned above, Keener again was SU’s top finisher shooting 76-71-69 to place fifth overall.  Senior Cheyne Kendall scored 75-78 in the first two rounds but vaulted 44 spots with a final round 65 – easily the lowest round of the entire tournament – to claim a 9th place finish.

WOMEN’S SOCCER:  lost a pair of heartbreakers, 1-0, at home last weekend.  The young Mountaineers have lost five straight matches by one slim goal each.   In Friday’s match, the lone goal came in overtime to make the loss that much more challenging.

VOLLEYBALL:  lost three matches at the SCAC Divisional.  SU was knocked off by Texas Lutheran and Trinity by 3-0 scores, but went to 4-sets in the loss to Southwestern on Saturday.
