Mountaineer Update
from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
September 2, 2014

The first weekend of sports action is in the books and it was a very strong start for our soccer teams in particular.    Special note:  Tonight, SU Volleyball has its home opener vs. Concordia-TX at Edington Gym at 7:00 pm.  The men’s and women’s golf teams get their fall season started next Monday and Tuesday while the fall teams will also be away from campus for road contests.

Here’s a quick recap of last weekend’s action:

MEN’S SOCCER:  won their season opener, 2-0, over Howard Payne.  SU scored on an HPU own goal and sophomore Manny Losoya added the insurance goal.  Both came in the second half after a 0-0 score at halftime.  Junior Scott Teitelman earned the shutout and recorded three saves.  Assists went to junior Ryan Hernandez and sophomore Chase Smith.  Last year, HPU defeated the Mountaineers 4-3.

WOMEN’S SOCCER:  won their season opener, 2-1, over Howard Payne; lost a 3-2 overtime contest at NAIA Huston-Tillotson.  A very young Schreiner squad is off to an impressive start.  Against HPU, second half goals by freshman Allyson Fowler and junior Kelcie Nesbitt rallied the team to big win.  HPU defeated SU last year, 4-1.  Against a scholarship program at HTU, second half goals by freshman Ruth Blackburn and freshman Ashley Foster force overtime.  Defensive mistakes ultimately was the difference but the Mountaineers have already scored four goals this year.  The team scored six goals in all of 2013.  Freshman goalkeeper Megan Morant had eight saves in the two matches.

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY:  finished fourth at the Alamo City Opener in San Antonio on Friday evening.  Junior Kevin Perez ran a career-best time of 22:47 for the 6k race and finished 14th overall in the field.  Freshman Ricky Canales place 22nd in his first collegiate race in a time of 24:22.  Sophomore Connor Ver Schuur was 23rd, followed by freshmen Marshall Sereno (25th) and Taylor Garces and junior Elliot Frey.

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY:  finished fourth at the Alamo City Opener.  Senior Adriana Mercado led the way with a time of 18:32 for the 4k race and placed 18th overall.  Junior Allyson Graybill was 21st in a time of 19:13, followed by sophomore Alexis Nyquist (23rd place), junior Miranda Reagan (24th), senior Devan Aguilar (26th) as well as freshman Rachel Jackson, junior Kaleen Dean and junior Katie Bishop.  It was the largest contingent of women runners in SU’s history.

VOLLEYBALL:  lost four matches at the TLU Bulldog Invitational.  Lost to Concordia-TX (3-0), FDU-Florham (3-0), LeTourneau (3-2) and Willamette (3-0).   Senior Kelli Bolen averaged 20 assists and 13 digs per match.  Junior Alyssa Chapman averaged 7.5 kills and both junior Caitlin Otten and freshman Lauren McQueen averaged 6.5 kills per match.
