Mountaineer Update
from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
September 10, 2014

Things are now in full swing for the fall season.  Our tennis teams go on their first trip this weekend – to the ASC Individual (which is an event featuring the teams in our former conference).

Congratulations to freshman Megan Morant of the Schreiner women’s soccer team for being named SCAC Defensive Player of the Week.  Also, congratulations to the men’s golf team (and senior Jimmy Keener) for winning the John Bohmann Invitational in record-breaking fashion.  Keener will likely be named SCAC Men’s Golfer of the Week for his 11 under par performance.  Our men’s and women’s soccer teams open SCAC play at home Friday afternoon against Texas Lutheran and our volleyball team plays a rare home match next Tuesday against NAIA scholarship Our Lady of the Lake.  See below for details.

Here’s a quick recap of last week’s action:

MEN’S GOLF:  the #3-ranked Mountaineers shot school record rounds of 275 (-9) and 279 (-5) over the last six holes to turn an eight shot deficit into a 13-stroke win in Seguin.  Keener shot 68-64-70 (-11) to win the individual title and break most of the school scoring records.   It was his third collegiate win.  But this was hardly a one man show, as all five players shot par or better in the final round including 69s from senior Zach Oliver and sophomore Matt McClung.

WOMEN’S SOCCER:  led by freshman Beth Ann Davis (first two collegiate goals, five shots) and Morant (four saves), the youthful Mountaineers posted a 2-0 shutout at LeTourneau on Friday.  Just three matches into the season, SU has already matched last season’s total goal output and is within one match of tying their wins.  Davis became the third freshman to score a goal this fall, joining Allyson Fowler and Ashley Fowler.

MEN’S SOCCER:  Junior Michel Clifford came in at halftime against LETU and shut down the Yellow Jacket offense and freshman Gregg Gutierrez scored the game-winner off a strong play by senior Zach Howard to give Schreiner a 2-1 road win.  Junior Ryan Hernandez scored his first goal of the season in the first half to give SU a brief lead.

WOMEN’S GOLF:  led by career-best performances by senior Melanie Dean and sophomore Kaycee Bankert (who each shot 78-79), SU scored a second place finish at the Lady Bulldog Invitational.  Senior Maddie Scheidler led the way in round 1 with a strong 76 but struggled a bit in her final nine holes in the second round while carding an 83.  Dean and Bankert tied for seventh place individually.

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY:  finished fourth at the TLU Invitational on Saturday morning.  Junior Kevin Perez again was SU’s top finisher in a time of 18:47 to place 14th in the field.  Freshman Ricky Canales was 18th in a time of 20:00 and sophomore Connor Ver Schuur was 20th at 20:27.

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY:  senior Adriana Mercado and junior Allyson Graybill again were SU’s top finishers as the Mountaineers finished fourth at the TLU Invitational.   Mercado ran her race in 23:19 (15th place) while Graybill was just 21 seconds back at 23:40 (17th).

VOLLEYBALL:  went 0-4 at the Millsaps Tournament in Jackson, MS.  Schreiner lost by 3-0 scores to the host team, Huntingdon and Belhaven and dropped a tough 3-1 affair to Mississippi College.  Against Millsaps, freshman Lauren McQueen led the way with seven kills and sophomore Dee Bague had five kills and a .154 attack percentage.
