Mountaineer Update
from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
April 29, 2015

After last weekend’s busy schedule ended on Sunday, the rest of the sports year becomes (pretty) quiet.  Still, there is a lot to report from last weekend including a terrific run by Schreiner Softball at the SCAC Championship Tournament and a successful final weekend for SU Baseball.  Before getting started, congratulations to softball freshman Sydney Christopher and sophomore Dominique Sandoval for earning First Team All-SCAC and All SCAC Tournament team respectively.  Senior Brianna Rodriguez and freshman Samantha Cordon also earned Honorable Mention All-SCAC.  Last, but not least, baseball junior Marco Carreon was named the SCAC’s final offensive player of the week for the regular season.

Here’s a look back at last weekend’s action:

SOFTBALL:  went 3-2 in the SCAC Tournament.  Despite being the lowest seed in the field (#6), a very young Schreiner squad knocked off #3 seed, Dallas, 4-2 in the first game, eliminated #5 seed Austin College with an 8-0 win in the third game and then rallied with four runs in the top of the seventh to send #4 seed Southwestern home on Saturday afternoon.  Unfortunately, SU couldn’t overcome #2 seed Trinity, losing 6-4 in the second game of the tournament and then losing 6-0 late Saturday evening to finish third in the event.  There were many highlights for the team, in addition to Sandoval’s efforts.  Sophomore Sarah Worrell blasted a two-run homer in the win over Southwestern and freshman pitcher Lori Espinoza threw a shutout against AC.

BASEBALL:  went 2-1 in the season’s final weekend against Southwestern.  The series started with a terrific and efficient 4-1 win.  Sophomore Hayden Ray pitched a complete game, allowing just one run on seven hits.  Carreon and freshmen Quinton Volovar and Kyle Romaguera provided the offense.   Saturday’s first game was a back-and-forth contest that the Mountaineers ultimately pulled out 10-7.  Carreon’s four hits and three RBI paved the way, but so did three hit performances from freshmen Sam Pistrui and Bret Hill.  Junior Blake Rowan earned the win in relief.

MEN’S TENNIS:  went 1-2 at the SCAC Tournament.  SU defeated Austin College, 6-1, in the first round before losing to host Southwestern, 5-2, and then also fell in the third place match with Texas Lutheran by that same 5-2 count.  The #3 doubles team of junior Teg Lozano and freshman Isaac Vasquez won all three matches during the tournament and freshman Nick Pena went earned both points in the TLU match.  One was by teaming with senior Austin Carrola at #1 doubles and then he won his #1 singles match as well in straight sets.

WOMEN’S TENNIS:  went 1-2 at the SCAC Tournament.  The Mountaineers crushed Centenary in their opening match, 5-0, before losing to Colorado College in the semifinals, 5-2, and then took a 3-1 lead against TLU in the third-place match but the Bulldogs won four matches to win, 5-3.   In both the second and third matches, Schreiner got wins from the #3 doubles team of Kelsey Buczkowski and freshman Katie Watts as well as from sophomore Camila Anguiano at #4 singles.  In the TLU match, the #2 doubles team of junior Karyn Swink and freshman Abby Knedlik also scored a point for Schreiner.
