Mountaineer Update
from Ron Macosko, Athletic Director
February 4, 2015

Although looking or walking outside may indicate otherwise, the spring for Schreiner sports teams officially begins on Friday with a home baseball game and a home tennis tournament.  Both teams will be playing in town on Saturday as well.    Golf will be starting a week later and softball has until early March before playing their first contest (although they are already hard at work preparing for their season).  All of this and our basketball teams are in the final 2+ weeks of the regular season with key matchups the rest of the way.

Here is a quick recap of last week’s action on the hardwood:

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL:  went 2-0 in Colorado and Louisiana last weekend.  Defeated Colorado College (74-68) and beat Centenary (66-50).  The Mountaineers have now won four straight and sit in second place in the SCAC with a 7-2 record.   At one point, SU was 1-7 and have gone 8-3 since.   Senior Brooke Sanders is rounding into form and averaged 18.5 ppg last weekend while sophomore guard Chris Jones averaged 10.5 points and sophomore Sabriyyah Fennell averaged nine points and six rebounds.  The Mountaineers now face their toughest weekend yet in road trips to TLU and Southwestern.

MEN’S BASKETBALL:  lost at both Colorado College (68-56) and at Centenary (78-71).  SU has lost three in a row to fall into the lower half of the conference standings.  After a promising non-conference season, the Mountaineers have struggled to get out to strong starts in their last several games and that has proved costly.  Schreiner trailed by nine points at CC and 12 at Centenary and that lack of consistency won’t get wins in a balanced league like the SCAC.   Sophomore Dustin Bercutt has played his best basketball of the season and averaged 13.5 ppg and five rebounds last week.  Senior Steve Guerrero averaged 10 rebounds per game.
