As you will read below, our tennis and baseball teams each got off to successful starts to the 2015 year this past weekend. As you’ll also note below, this will be a busy weekend on campus for Schreiner sports events. Not only will our tennis teams start their dual match seasons at home on Friday and Saturday, but our basketball teams each have their final two home games on those same days with Saturday’s games being Senior Day as well. Their games all have playoff implications for the postseason so a lot is riding on our ability to “protect our house”. Baseball is on the road in Jackson, MS for a big non-conference tournament and our golf teams start the 2015 season on Monday and Tuesday in Austin. Lots of chances to come out for some impressive Schreiner sports action and the price can’t be beat – FREE!
Here’s a quick recap of last week’s action:
WOMEN’S TENNIS - started their spring with a win in the first-ever Schreiner Invitational. It came down to the final matches on Saturday, but SU edged Southwestern for the team title. In singles and double play, the Mountaineers recorded five flight champions. Sophomore Alex Wheeler (#2 singles), junior Karyn Swink (#3 singles), sophomore Kelsey Buczkowski (#5) and freshman Katie Watts (#6) all took home titles in their respective flights as did the #1 doubles team of junior Leanna Haynes and sophomore Camila Anguiano.
BASEBALL – won two of three games last weekend vs. Sul Ross State. For the first two games, the combo of sophomore Hayden Ray and freshman Jayme Kidder held the best hitting team in our old conference (ASC) to just one run in each game over a total of 13 innings. SU posted 3-1 and 5-2 wins in those contests. The Lobos rebounded with a 21-hit attack that overcame the Mountaineers’ 17-hit effort in game three. Junior Marco Carreon had five hits and four runs scored and Kidder had five hits to go with four RBI. Junior Charlie Stewart returned from a major arm injury that cost him his 2014 season and posted saves in each of the first two wins.
MEN’S TENNIS - placed third out of eight teams in the Schreiner Invitational. SU was the highest-finishing non-scholarship team in the field, trailing only NAIA Our Lady of the Lake and the University of the Southwest. Juniors Teg Lozano and Christian Casillas had the Mountaineers top finish, runner-up at #3 doubles. Claiming third place were freshman Nick Pena (#2 singles), junior Josh Ramirez (#5 singles) and Casillas at #6 singles.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL - dropped a pair of games to two of the SCAC’s top teams on the road. Lost at TLU (82-67) and at Southwestern (72-55) to fall to 7-4 in league play with three big games remaining. This weekend, SU goes for season sweeps of both UDallas and Austin and any win at this stage of the year is going to bode well for seeding purposes as only the top six teams qualify. On Saturday, sophomore Sabriyyah Fennell led the Mountaineer effort with 14 points and four rebounds while senior Brooke Sanders added 12 and seven rebounds while sophomore Codi Simmons came off the bench to score 11 points.
MEN’S BASKETBALL - lost both games of a weekend road trip to TLU and Southwestern. The Mountaineers will need to break their five-game losing skid and find success over the final three games in order to lay claim to a post-season spot. SU stands at 4-7 in the SCAC with all three remaining games against the teams that they are either battling for the final spot or are ranked below them in the standings. Senior Steve Guerrero had a big game on Saturday, striking for 25 points while pulling down eight rebounds.
