First, lots of Mountaineers to recognize from this past weekend. Four of the seven possible SCAC player of the week awards went to Mountaineers so it was a good weekend for the home team. Congratulations to junior Kelsie Jackson (women's basketball), junior Karyn Swink (women's tennis), senior Cheyne Kendall (men's golf) and sophomore Kaycee Bankert (women's golf) for all earning SCAC POTW awards. Also, kudos go to senior Charlie Nunez (men's basketball) for being recognized as the SCAC Character & Community honoree from last week.
Here's a quick recap from a busy last week in Schreiner-land:
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: went 2-0 last weekend defeating both the University of Dallas and Austin College to improve to an impressive 9-4 in SCAC play. With the two wins, SU sweeps the regular season series with both schools and locks up no-worse-than fourth place in the regular season standings and seeding for next week's SCAC Tournament. Jackson was outstanding when the team needed her most, scoring a season-high 30 points in the UDallas win and leading the team from a 12-point halftime deficit to the victory. She also averaged nine rebounds and two steals in each game.
MEN'S GOLF: the #7-ranked Mountaineers got their spring season off to a strong start in lousy weather. SU won the Linda Lowery Invitational by eight shots, knocking off three teams in the national top-25 as well as seven other schools en route to the title. Kendall was runner up but shot the round of the tournament, a 73, in the worst of the weather. Only two other players shot below 78 the first day and none were within three shots of Kendall's first round. Sophomore Matt McClung posted SU's low second round of 76.
WOMEN'S TENNIS: opened the dual match portion of their schedule with a pair of wins. SU defeated Sul Ross State (7-2) and Southwestern (5-4). Swink had a big hand in the SCAC-opening win over the Pirates. She teamed with freshman Abby Knedlik to win a particularly hard-fought doubles match at #2 and then turned around and won at #3 singles. With the team faltering after a quick 3-0 lead in doubles play, Swink and sophomore Alex Wheeler had to win in the third set to get the team victory and both responded like champions.
WOMEN'S GOLF: started off the spring season with a second-place finish at the Linda Lowery Invitational. The only team to finish ahead of SU was NCAA Division II Southern Arkansas and that was only by one shot. Bankert posted SU's low score each of the two days and set a career best with her runner up finish in the tournament. She trailed only Helle Leed of Sweden in the individual totals. The Mountaineers were tops among NCAA D-III teams with the next closest team 23 shots back.
MEN'S BASKETBALL: broke their six game losing streak with a huge 66-63 win over visiting Austin College on Saturday. The win clinches a spot in the SCAC postseason tournament that starts next week. Sophomore Wes Miller scored 20 points while junior Christian Pena added 14 off the bench in the win. Lost to the University of Dallas last Friday.
MEN'S TENNIS: went 1-2 in a busy opening weekend of dual matches. Beat Sul Ross State (8-1) but lost to Dallas Baptist and Southwestern. Against the Pirates, SU's point came from the first ever pairing of senior Stephen Rogers and junior Christian Casillas at #2 doubles. In the loss to DBU, Schreiner got singles wins from freshman Nick Pena and juniors Josh Ramirez and Teg Lozano. Lozano paired with freshman Isaac Vasquez for a win at #3 doubles.
BASEBALL: went 0-3 at the Millsaps Tournament in Jackson, MS. Schreiner pitchers had a tough time in two of the three games, but freshman Jayme Kidder had his second straight terrific start in the middle game. Unfortunately, the SU offense couldn't get untracked in a 2-1 loss in 10 innings.
